Of all the new generation girl groups, Sonamoo have had the hardest time distinguishing themselves from the pack. Over the course of three title tracks, the girls have given us some decent music, but it’s all been slavishly generic. It’s almost as if their agency doesn’t quite know what to do with them. Unfortunately, the forgettable I Think I Love U (나 너 좋아해?) continues this trend.

Continuing with the sound of last summer’s I Like U Too Much (I guess the girls have moved on from “like” to “love”), I Think I Love U is a bouncy pop confection, powered by a brassy synth instrumental. The beat is actually pretty strong, rarely letting up across the track’s running time. It has an incredibly upbeat, retro flavor — like something you’d hear as part of Hairspray. Sadly, the accompanying melody feels like a retread of countless cutesy girl group comebacks. It moves at a breakneck pace, hardly pausing to breathe. But though this keeps things from getting boring, there’s just not much in the way of hooks to grasp on to.

Instead, the song devolves into a bunch of cheerleader-esque shouting and half-hearted aegyo. As polished as Sonamoo are, they lack any real memorable vocal tones, making their output even harder to distinguish from others. I’m not sure what the solution to this is, apart from a total reinvention. They probably would have been better off sticking with the edgier sound of their debut rather than attempting to follow popular trends and delivering a diminished version of what other groups are doing much more effectively.
