Top Three K-Pop Songs of May 2018

Monthly Round-UpAt the end of each month, I look back at my three favorite title tracks by k-pop artists. I take my own ratings into account, but there’s a bit of wiggle room as certain songs tend to grow or fade.

May 2018 Overall Thoughts

All things considered, May was a pretty solid month. It definitely had its sluggish weeks, but a few high-profile comebacks made up for the slower moments. It was interesting to watch the field clear for BTS’ mid-May comeback, with most other big names choosing to return either at the beginning or end of the month.

Though none of them quite managed to break into my top three (it was close!), I want to give some deserved spotlight to this month’s girl groups. I’m well aware that my personal bias leans stronger towards the music of boy groups (that’s why this site is called “the bias list” and not “the totally objective list”), but I’m heartened by the increased musical diversity we’re seeing from the ladies lately. Dreamcatcher and (G)I-DLE, in particular, are helping to bring back an edgier girl group concept. Both released standout songs this month.

2018 also continues its tradition of strong j-pop singles by Korean acts. Though it was ineligible for a place in my top three, Seventeen’s Call Call Call was probably my favorite overall song of the month. Meanwhile, my Korean top three is populated by two unsurprising acts and one dark horse who happened to deliver a stellar track.

With a number of promising rookies scheduled to make their comeback at the beginning of June, I’m feeling optimistic about the upcoming summer months!

  1. This May’s releases were quite good; Shinee, BTS, G-Idle, and all that. But this June will be just awesome (almost overwhelming), comebacks from – Blackpink, Wanna One, NCT (rumors), Yubin, Fromis_9, more Shinee, BTOB, Momoland, and the rumored debut of SM’s new girl group. It’s just *sighs*. It’s going to be EPIC!!!

  2. Once again our tastes line up almost exactly, haha. I haven’t listened to Good Evening more than twice (the hour it came out) yet, so I can’t really form an opinion on it, but other than that, my ranking is the same as yours. OMG was an absolute knockout! Since I’ve followed Halo from my first few weeks in the K-Pop world, I’m very happy that they got such a great song, and that it seems to be garnering at least a bit more attention for them. I also definitely agree with the standout girl groups (though I do lean more towards Dreamcatcher, I found G-IDLE a little too trend-appealing to be more than just a very good song). Call Call Call, as well as all of the Korean group J-Pop this year, has been a breath of fresh air- many Japanese comebacks don’t work for me because they appeal to very rigid, simple (even stereotypical) concepts, like Seventeen’s fairly streamlined biker style this time around, but the groups this year have made those simplistic musical styles work and bent them to fit their unique sound. I’m very happy with this May, and I hope the rest of the year follows in its footsteps!
