I don’t know where to put this comment, so I thought about here would be OK.
Last week, I encountered for the very first time, actual kpop albums in an actual store. (Not counting the single BTS copy I saw once at Target.) Now, I have been listening to kpop for almost 5 years now. Mostly, I purchase through itunes, except for an occasional Japanese one for which I pay dearly on Amazon or the like. In that time, I have amassed a substantial virtual collection of several thousand songs across three ipods.
So there I was at Princeton Record Exchange, with hubby for his semi-annual vinyl fix at that store. And there wedged in the awkward spot where a column interrupts the vinyl bins was a cardboard box, bread box size, just resting on the edges of the bins. Paper sign “Kpop” taped on the column above with a hand drawn arrow pointing down. There was one, perhaps two each of the 2019 popular releases. MonstaX, Stray Kids, SuperM, Twice, Red Velvet, X1, etc. I held the AKMU album in my hands, my favorite album for the year. I held Super Junior Time Slip in my hands, Ryeowook cover. These things are substantial visual objects. I admired the prices, mid $20’s. The I looked at the giant stack of $1 and $2 CD’s in the crook of my left elbow, and put the kpop back in its little wedged box.
I just couldn’t do it. Not even for Ryeowook. I couldn’t buy an album I already own for mid $20’s. Sure, I could (and did) buy for $1 Paul SImon “Rhythm of the Saints” to replace the one for which I have the case but not the CD inside anymore. But a current album I do have, nope. Not even for Ryeowook.
Seriously, I don’t know how some fans amass multiple copies of these things. Where do they keep them all? What happens in 10-20 years when their moms clean out all their stuff, will they all show up in the Princeton Record Exchange of Korea in the cardboard boxes on the ground below the main bins?

Imagine those die-hard fans buying all four or five copies of the same album. This is one of the things that I try to make my sister understand that she does not need all copies of the same album – luckily she listens well. One of my sis’ friends used to be a hardcore Army until she left the fandom for another. Needless to say, she is lucky enough to sell most of the stuff (i.e. albums, dvds).

Worse are those who try to pump up itunes rankings by downloading and deleting and downloading and deleting and repeat Hundreds of dollars on what? air? Then some will post comments that its all OK because they are spending their own money and it makes them feel powerful, happy, respected, etc etc.
Hey, if I want to feel powerful from ephermeral moments, I would go to Disney World and stay in one of those bungalows in Polynesia with champagne room service and my own damn view of the fireworks, which would all cost about the same.
