SUMMER OF K-POP: Girl’s Day – Darling

There are few things I enjoy more than a great summertime song. They’re bright, they’re exciting, and they remind me of my favorite time of the year.

There’s no telling what this summer in K-pop will bring, but over the next few weeks I’ll be flashing back each day, showcasing a highlight from past summers. The rules are simple: I fire up my carefully compiled “K-pop summer” playlist, hit ‘shuffle,’ and if the song that pops up hasn’t already been featured on the site, it gets a post and mini-review of its own.

So, get ready for a summer of K-pop on The Bias List!

Girl’s Day – Darling (2014)

Girl’s Day’s Darling is a refreshingly old-fashioned affair, hearkening back to girl group classics of the past with its carnival-barker intro, brass-kissed instrumental and splashy, sing-along chorus. When it was first released, I dismissed it as a gimmicky little pop trifle, but that sense of novelty has actually given it amazing longevity. Six years later, it remains an evergreen summertime hit. The group’s breathy, Sistar-esque delivery makes it all go down easy, buoyed by the melodic skill of production team Duble Sidekick. It’s not the kind of iconic Girl’s Day moment like Expect and Something, but still stands as an idiosyncratic highlight within their discography.

  1. Yay! Truly an underrated song and an underrated group. “Darling,” as fun as it is on its own merits, is a great example of Girl’s Day’s charisma carrying the day. I really miss them. They have a stellar singles discography. “Nothing Lasts Forever” is one of the greatest bridge-to-third-chorus transitions in all of K pop — a Girl’s Day staple in all their best work!

  2. Did you know? Golden Child’s One now sounds more like Lucifer , when I’m thinking about it. ATEEZ is coming back and their On Cover is miles better than the original! and upcoming July will be awesome but the best part of this all: You making a review of one of my all time favorite summer k-pop songs!
It sounds just something like Sistar would make
    I’ll give it a 10!

  4. I remember when the teasers came out and they were being compared to Secret and semi-accused of trying to do a ‘shy boy’ esque song LOL

Definitely a video and song that endeared me to this group and got me to look at them again.
