Song Review: aespa – Next Level

aespa - Next LevelSay you’re one of the biggest music agencies in the world and you’re looking to launch your next big girl group. What do you do? Saddle them with a Christmas song (in February!)? Toss them an old b-side from the soundtrack of a Fast & Furious spin-off? Both sound like awful ideas, yet this is how SM Entertainment’s aespa have been managed thus far. Next Level arrives by way of F&F’s Hobbs and Shaw, from the vintage year of… 2019. But no need to worry. SM has a long – mostly illustrious – history of taking existing songs and reinventing them.

This is the case with Next Level. Though if follows the basic formula of its source material, the whole track has that easily-identifiable, Yoo Young-Jin arranged SM sound. And against all odds, I think it’s kind of great.

Let’s start with that oscillating electro bass. Yes, it’s cribbed right from the original track, but it forms a fierce backbone that delivers the requisite girl crush grit while carving its own niche. Given how rap-heavy the track is, this killer instrumental is vital to Next Level’s success. It grounds even the silliest moments, including that blustering chorus. aespa’s delivery is intentionally measured, and I like how the rap opts for a slower flow. The whole arrangement has a sinuous style that’s surprisingly engaging.

True to Yoo Young-Jin form, Next Level eventually works its way into an interruptive r&b breakdown. The track is upended – rhythm and all – for an exciting vocal showcase that hearkens back to SM’s old-school sound. It’s very funky, but all of Next Level is much funkier than I’d expected. Even if its warring parts don’t quite hold together, I can’t help but nod my head as the girls stake their claim as heirs to SM’s weighty legacy.

    • Finally someone likes this song as much as I do-
I love the back track changes and although it felt a bit chaotic with differing parts at times, it still managed to blend pretty well. Even the almost monotone at first “I’m on the next level” grew on me after a while

  1. You love this? HOW?! The only good part is their original section and the overall change in key. I’m not opposed to rap heavy songs but this is literally just them lifting the track wholesale. Comparing it to second releases by f(x) and RV and it just doesn’t compare either.

Aespa is surviving on the hype of their company alone. That’s no shade to the girls themselves but let’s call a thing a thing people – if this song was produced/released by a group from a smaller company no one would be searching to redeem it. I didn’t like ZZB either but at least THAT was original and trying to do something instead of just existing in the same key for a majority of its runtime.

      • I just feel like SM is doing them so dirty – 3 releases and 2 of those are covers with no mini album in sight? They’ve invested everything in to their aesthetic – and this SM AI universe – but hardly anything into them artistically IMO which is just not how they’ve treated their girl groups and it’s extremely disappointing.

Even if it was going to be a cover why something so exact?? I was hoping they’d take whatever they released to the next level but it feels very parallel. perhaps if there was more singing interplay with the rest of the song? IDK. Extremely disappointing either way.

    • OMG true like this is more like a mushup song rather than a comeback. And yes, if this is from a group not from the big 3 they would shred it to prices and put it to negative one. This really is a bias review

What year is it? If this were a 5 or 10 or so ago, this would be an f(x) or 2NE1 song, except it would actually be, yanno, good. Naega cheil chal naga.

      • A rap song with similarly slow flow: “Hot Pink” ?

I definitely don’t think it is one of the best halftime track of all the SMPs, but it is not a quick dismissal to me either. The overall slow tempo do have its charm to me

        • I don’t know..Hot Pink does have a slow tempo but it has way more groove to it than this does in my opinion. Hot Pink does not feel that slow to me, but the slowness of this one really stood out to me.

    • Camp needs a either a tongue-in-cheek attitude and/or over-the-top commitment to the concept to work. This takes itself too seriously and somehow at the same time isn’t dramatic enough to really work as camp.

Funny enough Itzy’s latest title which was less positively received does work for me as camp. This is just…weird in a not fun way.

  3. Well

    This is a polarizing comeback.

But being the weirdo I am, I end up on the equator. 8 for me. The bass was awesome, not so sold on the R&B, it needs a LOT more melody, but the track as a whole is for some reason good, and is obviously going to grow on me.

  4. I literally felt like I was listening to 4 songs at once.Which I don’t like at all.

I am surprised u gave this song 8.75,cuz I find black mamba much better than next level.Again it’s that rap-talking kinda song, which is quite boring and forgettable for me.

I am disappointed that both Itzy and aespa failed to meet my expectations this year:(
Literally everything but the song is on the point.

  7. Kinda underwhelmed with this. I love the next level parts but it is also the parts that’s ripped out from the original song? So I don’t know what that entails. As a casual listener and like many of the kpop fans, I’m confused and honestly can’t tell what even sm changed with the original song. I know fans are complementing this as æspa’s I got a boy but the complete 180 isn’t really enjoyable aside from their voices. I don’t know why but that beat drop part is so funny to me.

    In 2021, we have:

We need a rap-o-meter for english lyrics in kpop, seriously.

That said, I do 100% percent agree this is way more compelling than the less than 3 minute snippet that is Black Mamba

Foot note is Winter’s voice is truly very special, I am usually very dismissive of “talent” and believe everything can be trained, but I have never seen people born with an FM effect attached to their vocal cord. She can practically sing “Abracadabra” from Brown Eyed Girls without processing but still has the effect.

  9. Really? SM really loves their switch-ups and mash-ups, except for some reason they love mixing bad songs with good songs. I already went through this with House Party and I exclusively listen to the version without the rap. Ironically, this song’s the opposite and they just made the switch-up this time the actual good song. From the vocal run right before it, to the TVXQ Something & RV Be Natural, just funk and an actual melody that is way more catchy and fun than NEXT. LEVEL. UGH, I could listen to an entire song with that.

The rest is just… talk-rapping the entire time, with a pretty eh hook. I don’t think the production is too bad but it’s…still not super great. Yeah, I’ll pass except the occasional listen to that funky section. It can see it somewhat good, but no thanks.

Now that you mention it, I did not realize this was actually THE Fast & Furious b-side song… WHAT? I heard the rumors but I didn’t realize they actually think they went through with it. Are SM crazy or something? Is there like a Fast & Furious stan/creative director in the producer line-up that just decided they needed to make a last stand or something and make their magnum opus by immortalizing one of the F&F songs into their girl group?

Also, I find the lore to be… bold let’s say. Like, LOONA is crazy and somewhat obtuse with their visual storytelling, but at least they use understandable concepts like color theory, animals, fruits, the moon and butterfly theory. SM is bringing out all the stops from KWANGYA, to NU EVO, to nævus, to KOSMO. This is wild to write and put in a song. It is absolutely unconsumable by the public no matter how much you try to sell it. With pop love songs, at least the concept of love is understandable. I still don’t have a single clue as to a concept of the lore that I could follow other than the terms, weird landscapes, and the occasional cameos from the eponymous “aespa” that only barely work. The MV has the same amount of commitment to lore as LOONA, which is to say vaguely there (and I say this as an orbit).

    Liked by 2 people

    • Agreed on the lore. You can sell a really weird concept so long as you give people some relatable or understandable way into the concept. There really isn’t anything concrete to latch on to here; someone with passing interest would barely be able to make heads or tails of the track or the MV and that seems like a fail to me, especially for a group this new.

      Liked by 1 person

    • Thank you so much for mentioning the lore, I was looking for that. It’s becoming increasingly apparent that both Black Mamba and Next Level’s lyrics are based entirely on this fictional world, without an actually meaning or message in sight. Repeating KWANGYA and aespa in one song is fine (I guess), but then to go repeat the same nonsense words multiple times in the next song is too much for me. And sadly, against my better wishes, I think this will be the norm for aespa moving forward.

I’m all for connecting storylines and a narrative, like that stuff is very cool and fun, but the songs also need to be able to stand on their own and make sense, both lyrically and MV wise. A good example of this is ATEEZ. They have a hidden narrative that’s not stated outright, yet every song has an appropriate message or theme in the lyrics. They make sense on their own, and can later be put together as a story. One difference between aespa and ATEEZ though, is that SM Ent wants aespa’s storyline to be explicitly told (if you watch the other films lmao), while ATEEZ is hidden connections. Which personally, I think is way more fun — it’s a way to engage fans and get them talking as they make theories and try to piece the story together themselves. And then casual fans and listeners of ATEEZ can join in with listening to the comeback without feeling polarized or completely out of the loop, which can be a big turn off.

And this whole lyrics thing is actually very disappointing to me. It’s one of my favorite parts of the music, which is so often overlooked and not utilized, especially in some cases in K-pop. aespa’s lyrics are becoming solely focused on their universe, and are missing some fun opportunities. Like Black Mamba, for example (which I think is an awesome title/concept), could be about hidden snakes (u know fake friends), or underestimating appearances (bc BM are one of the most deadly snakes), or like taking revenge on someone or something! Literally anything other than what they did would’ve been cool!! Next Level could’ve been about making a new standard of K-pop group, or moving up ranks in the K-pop world (which is a bit self-centered, I know), or finally debuting and moving to the level of a real group. There are so many possibilities and endless potential that’s just wasted by some universe that literally no one is invested in. Like, at least do some character introductions so we actually care about the people in the storyline for goodness sake! I’ll keep a tiny piece of my heart hoping, but I have no expectations that anything will change.

  10. This was a ride! The beginning didn’t give me high hopes. It was well done and polished, but it was the sing-talking girl crush style we’ve heard so much of already. I kept thinking “why? why isn’t the song allowing the girls to flex their great vocals?”

It was a breath of fresh air when NingNing started singing, and then the switch up happened and WOW that was DELICIOUS. Yoo Young-Jin’s style just radiates from it, and I felt like I was hearing TVXQ (in a good way). This section elevates the song a ton for me. Maybe I’ll grow to love (instead of just accept) the sections bookending it.

Even though I was initially confused at the whole song and structure itself (and the lalalala’s esp), the wonky lyrics and heavy bass made it fun to listen to as a foreign fan…I feel like even though they could have released something better to round out their minimal discography (mini-album when ;-;), this is just something to jam to when you’re alone and in the vibes…(whoo wheeee, watch me while I work it out!)

  13. The r&b breakdown and that bass…

Except for that, I think this is actually the first time I’ve totally been against the original rating.

The song felt so disconnected and was it honestly so hard to make through the song. The standout breakdown with strong vocals showed what the song could’ve been with the symphonic touches. But, instead, we got key changes and tempo changes that were so off-putting. I understand that this will be a polarizing comeback. But, this is the peak example of uninspired sing talk hookless verses.

I can barely remember the song. Low 5s for me.

  15. I’m here for “Next Level” each listen, the unconventional structure grows on me, and the power of the girls’ performance grows more and more convincing.

For one- I don’t care that this was out on a soundtrack from 2019. For one, many k-pop songs coming out were written years ago and have to go through the industry machine to see the light o day. I’m guessing this was a track that was getting shopped to many labels and sync purposes – SM just decided to give it another go.

Another note – this is not “I got a boy” – “IGAB” is about exploring the different musical worlds Girls Generation had established themselves masters of. “Next Level” is really tied to the sci-fi concepts that drive AESPA and allow to show what their sound may offer in the future.

I love their rapping on this track – it’s really superior rapping to a lot of what we’ve heard recently. Anyway, this song continues to grow for me, and I’ve been excited for this comeback since those AMAZING teaser images.

No, it’s not love, but it’s exciting, and it’s freakin weird. I have a lot of thoughts about this but above all, I dig

  16. the reactions are fast and immediate for next level,

I’m glad you like it too! Next Level is very polarising, and that’s an excellent continuation of the SM spirit haha. I’m very excited that the new girl group’s inheriting this bonkers SM performance sound

the bridge where Ning Ning & Winter sing is so much fun, and really harkens to SM classic voices like Shinee or TVXQ

It would’ve been much better if aespa has more original songs or frequent comebacks, or if the song wasn’t such a close rehash, but disregarding these issues, i’m enjoying this comeback a lot more than expected! im really looking forward to their next album

  17. I don’t get the I Got A Boy comparisons. 1) IGAB was not SNSD’s very first actual comeback and arrived after they’d already built themselves an identity 2) IGAB was actually good and felt bold and inspired.

I feel I’m being a bit too harsh on aespa, and it’s certainly not the fault of the girls themselves who do the best they can with this (although I feel this really does not let them show off their rapping skills and their vocal parts, which are nice, feel way too short) but as a long-term SM fan I think I have to accept I’ve grown out of SM’s new musical trends/’innovation’. Their musical direction these days just feels so… stale. This feels like they tried to switch up the Next Level original song to make it more interesting but didn’t do enough to actually make it feel bold and different. Adding in a classic YYJ part and then abandoning that to go back to the ‘next level’ bit and not try to make it all come together even more cohesively and explosively in the final chorus like with IGAB – it feels like a missed opportunity.

And the lyrics – what is aespa’s sound as a group beyond their shoe-horning in of the SMCU concepts? Please leave the lore to the 10 minute cinematic trailers (which by the way was gorgeous). Also, even if I cared much about this lore, these lyrics did not do a great job of explaining it to me because it just name-dropped a bunch of things I have no clue about. Ugh, I’m sad.

To those of you who like the song though, that’s nice. Still holding out hope for more from aespa in the future.

      • Oh I agree, in terms of my personal preference I’ll take a good pop song that’s clearly defined and well executed any day of the week. I just think when someone wants to go ‘experimental’, they should commit to it fully. To be clear, I’m not saying YYJ or the others who worked on Next Level didn’t do so, or that they’re ‘lazy’ – I’m just saying I feel the way they reworked this song didn’t hit for me because the way this is arranged doesn’t feel either fully cohesive or completely sharply distinct with compelling individual parts. I wish it had been one or the other. Then again, taste is subjective 🙂

  18. Hmmm I’m actually neither here nor there with this comeback. I absolutely do not hate it because the elements by themselves are all done really well. These girls have good rap flow and vocals.

However, the lack of a cohesive song structure flow throughout the song is a bit off putting. I can see the song growing on me though, and only time will tell if the unusual structure keeps its appeal with me.

  19. I am so surprised by this rating! For me, its in the range of a 6 on 10.

While I liked the instrumental in the beginning, I’m not a fan of the chorus or how it changes later. It seems like a weird mix and certainly not the “next level” I hope aespa would take (lol, I had to). Also, I’m tired of groups being so “Look at me”, especially when they are so young in the game (completely agree with the comments above on this). I don’t know about funky, my impression is leaning more towards wonky for this song.

  20. There are parts here that I love. Unfortunately those parts sound like snippets from three completely different, great songs, mashed together with one really mediocre slow sing-talk track.

I just wish the producers had taken one or two of the ideas presented here and fully fleshed those out instead of doing..whatever this is. The very abrupt way the parts start and stop without any logical transition gives me flashbacks to Super Junior’s House Party.

  25. It’s not that bad, but honestly you’re being way too generous with the score… this is really just an blatant but failed attempt at an IGAB 3.0 (IGAB 2.0 being House Party by Super Junior, which was also… not great). The R&B part in the middle doesn’t mesh with the rest of the song well at all (a R&B singing verse over an outdated R&B instrumental thrown into a whole song with talk-rapping over a typical girl-crush futuristic instrumental doesn’t match at all and the change isn’t enjoyable, especially when it goes back to the talk-rapping).

The production isn’t that great. It feels like SM blew their budget on aespa’s teaser images and forgot to add like a dozen missing layers to the actual song; I really can’t understand how you gave Next Level a 9 for production.

Tbh, if this wasn’t from SM, I doubt you would be rating it this high… this is like overall on the same level as Itzy’s Mafia In The Morning and the rating for that song was insanely low. But I suppose there’s a real reason why this site is called the Bias List after all, which is perfectly fine, usually SM is capable of making great songs that are greatly produced (so I can understand your preconceived bias) but this is one of the exceptions (which have been increasing at an alarming rate since last year) – while this song was definitely still listenable, it was also really an undercooked mess of a song.

  26. Yeah….so SM got me unreasonably excited for this one after the 10 minute teaser film that actually made the initially freakish AI concept come off as really cool and interesting. I don’t care for this song; it’s just boring to me. The funny thing is that if you put it on 1.25 speed it sounds a lot better to me, like it was meant to be sung and rapped at this speed rather than the grinding pace of the original. Perhaps it’s just my internet induced gen z short attention span. Also kind of bummed about how the entire song is filled with these SMCU tie in words–naevis, kwangya, cosmo, going to this place or that–even as someone interested in the ‘lore’ I wonder why they couldn’t just release a normal song with normal, more universal sounding lyrics and just keep the fancy SMCU elements to the music video and teaser films. (Although the one mention of popping in the lyrics and the implication that jopping apparently has an in universe significance and wasn’t just some SM songwriter’s 3am fever dream is a little brain breaking for me.)

  28. This song hits every TBL hate checkbox so nicely that I came here assuming a rating somewhere in the 2-3 range. It has negative propulsion or melodicism or hookiness. Comparing this to I Got A Boy is comical, that’s like saying a rusted out ’96 ford taurus is like a Ferrari because they’re both cars. To each their own, but since it seems like SM is currently in the process of letting Red Velvet die an unceremonious death ala SNSD and f(x) I’d really just enjoy it if there were a worthy successor. Nothing lasts forever though, I guess.
