Last time I wrote about a Momoland song, the girls were collaborating with DJ/producer Chromance. Surprisingly, their newest single sees them paired with another global artist. This time, it’s Dominican singer Natti Natasha. I think these collaborations are a cool idea, but they make me question how much faith MLD Entertainment has in Momoland themselves. The girls could certainly do with a new comeback that’s all their own.

Yummy Yummy Love touches upon some of the fluffy novelty that’s fueled most of Momoland’s strongest work. It’s bright and catchy and not meant to be taken too seriously. I really like the general vibe. Its chorus makes for a strong anchor, casting a breezy hook over celebratory brass. Parts of the instrumental remind me a bit of Sweetune’s work. The production moves forward without fatigue and remains focused. The song’s first few moments inform everything going forward, and the strength of the melody is echoed by the instrumental flourishes.

Unfortunately, I’m not sold on the skatting. This technique first pops up during the pre-chorus and is (to put it nicely)… distracting. Honestly, I’ve never been a big fan of skatting in pop songs, and Yummy Yummy Love‘s take on the style feels too cute and too repetitive. It doesn’t play a huge part in the arrangement, but it’s hard to ignore. The song would be better off without it. Conversely, Natti Natasha melds seamlessly with the group. I’m not familiar with her own work, but she makes for a natural fit here.
