I write this review en route from KCON LA, where TXT headlined day three of the festival (more on that later). In a fun twist of fate, it was also the day their most recent Japanese single was released. Setsuna Hanabi (セツナハナビ) follows a very strong Japanese album last year and largely carries the pace … Continue reading
In connection with my desire to fully keep up with the J-pop industry, I’m planning to do a weekly round-up of any new releases that have caught my ear. Some of these may have been covered on the blog already, but my hope is that this will become a one-stop shop for anyone interested in … Continue reading
Rookie SM girl group Hearts2Hearts are throwing their hat in the J-pop ring with their first original Japanese single. Iconic Heart arrives on the heels of a very successful 2026 in Korea. The group’s bright pop sound seems tailor-made for Japanese tastes, but Iconic Heart lacks the effusive hooks of their best work. Right off … Continue reading

Starship Entertainment’s new boy group AEN debuts as a hybrid K-pop/J-pop group, releasing versions of each song on their album in both languages. As someone who prefers having a “definitive version” of a song, I’m not usually a fan of tracks recorded in multiple languages, but I understand the commercial strategy behind it. At any … Continue reading
This year, I’ve been pining for a musical highlight that captures the summer energy while also being… you know… a good song. Those have been very hard to come by the past few weeks, but there are a few active groups who have a track record of releasing nothing but bangers. And, dangling off in … Continue reading

At the end of each month, I look back at my three favorite title tracks by K-pop artists. I take my own ratings into account, but there’s a bit of wiggle room as certain songs tend to grow or fade. July 2026 Overall Thoughts I really don’t want to be a buzzkill, but now that we’re … Continue reading
I know there are many readers who look forward to this post each year, but I’ve been putting it off because I just don’t have many songs to inaugurate! For those new to the blog, this is a feature where I reveal any songs that have grown into a 10-out-of-10 rating since their initial review. … Continue reading
ILLIT’s music has grown more gimmicky with time, often on the hunt for the best TikTok challenge rather than the best songwriting. This is more of an observation than a judgment because there have been plenty of great K-pop groups who built their careers around gimmicks in the past. But every once and awhile, it’s … Continue reading

It’s been awhile since I’ve connected with a new aespa single, but as they move their attention to the Japanese market with Kiss N Tell, there’s an opportunity to switch things up and offer a different sound. This isn’t a complete reinvention, but takes the banging electro influence of songs like Lemonade and merges it … Continue reading
I featured Superstar on my J-pop round-up a few days ago, but I know only a sliver of readers regularly check that out and the song has since become a staple on my playlist so I thought I’d give it a longer write-up. PG are a co-ed, very young group from Avex that first hit … Continue reading

It’s been awhile since I’ve watched any of INI’s content, but Ozaki Takumi was always a favorite member of mine. His good-hearted nature and willingness to be the butt of a joke made him come across as amiable and relatable. With that persona in mind, I never would have imagined he had something like Sonzai … Continue reading
NXON is a new supergroup made up of the acts APEX and AWIN, which makes me feel a little crazy because I’m not familiar with either of those groups. However, when I hear something I enjoy (which happens too infrequently these days!) I want to share. The guys have released both Japanese and Korean versions … Continue reading
After releasing a cover of TRF’s Boy Meets Girl last month, NCT Wish are back with the other half of their double A-side single. YO-I-DON! takes us into the frantic, fast-paced world inhabited by a certain style of J-pop. I’m not sure whether you’d call it Denpa or simply Eurobeat-influenced pop music, but whatever the … Continue reading

ONEUS have been operating as a four-piece for awhile now and it definitely feels like something substantial is missing without Seoho’s voice. Still, they’re keeping things chugging along with new Japanese release Under — a perfectly pleasant and almost immediately forgettable light funk pop track. This kind of a song is a dime a dozen … Continue reading
