I’ve watched a handful of Running Man episodes, but not enough to be super familiar with every cast member. Because of this, I come into Lonely Night without any bias towards Gary as a television personality (except feeling that “Gary” is a horribly boring name for one of Korea’s most successful rappers). This allows me to focus entirely on the song, which is surprisingly pretty good. To me, it sounds like a mix between Taeyang’s 1PM and Jay Park’s Joah, both awesome tracks in their own right. It’s not quite as catchy as either of them, but the hook provides enough smooth, singalong melody to offset the less-than-memorable rapping. What I especially love is the organic instrumentation throughout. It livens up the song and gives it much needed warmth and heart. Ultimately, what holds the track back from being truly great is the been-there, done-that feeling that permeates almost every production and songwriting choice.
