Mintty is from girl group Tiny-G, who I can’t say I know all that much about except that they were all short (hence the name) and they disbanded last year. But, it’s always nice to have another female rapper in kpop, and that’s exactly what Mintty is giving us with the funky Already Go Lady.
The song fits squarely in the “enjoyable” column, not unpleasant or annoying in any sense, but also failing to make a mark of its own. The Bhangra-esque beat sounds as if it’s been lifted directly from the early 2000’s. It has a nice bounce to it, and thankfully the song doesn’t stretch itself to seem more hardcore or “street” than it is. I can definitely get behind this, though I also struggle to remember anything unique about the track once it’s finished, save for maybe the infectious chorus. It’s a similar situation with Mintty herself. Part HyunA and part Unpretty Rapstar, she gets the job done, but it’s nothing new in the world of idol rappers.
I do appreciate the fact that she takes on not only the rap verses but the pop bridge and chorus as well. She performs both with more energy than the actual track is supplying her, and that elevates Already Go Lady from something that could have been incredibly basic to something that’s at least pretty catchy. Not bad, especially from an artist I know little about. But in the cutthroat world that is my kpop playlist, “not bad” is just a hair short of making the cut.
