K-Pop A-Z Review: EXO – Love Me Right

One song. Every day. Alphabetical order.

Keep up with EXO’s A-Z reviews here!

Love Me Right (from Love Me Right – 2015)

Released at the height of EXO’s funk-pop era, Love Me Right is a dynamo of a comeback. Right from the start, the instrumental deposits us into the groove, like a warp portal to percussive pleasure. The production is incredibly sticky, melding a hard-hitting dance beat to endless doses of rhythm guitar. From here, the melody takes the reins and doesn’t let go. Lesser songs would try to play around with the formula, zig-zagging here and there. But, Love Me Right never forgets the immense power of its groove. By the time the instrumental drops to hand-claps and vocals, the audience is out of their seats, slaves to the rhythm. This all turns out to be a wonderful match for EXO’s amiable vocals, which swagger through the track with freewheeling glee. Love Me Right is a robust slab of pop song perfection — all killer, no filler.

  1. Hey Nick, just curious.. ..is EXO your favorite all-time K-Pop group? Don’t feel bad if you can’t answer that. If someone asked for my all-time faves, I’d reply, “That depends; what time is it?”

  2. When this song came out, I did not care, I was angry at SM for mistreating my 3 favorite members (Luhan, Kris and Tao). Eventually I came around to this songs, maybe not a 10 but definitely a 9 something!

  3. This is the rare kpop song that could sound good in any era in any language. The melodies are so crystal clear and simple, it is so adaptable. That is what makes it a classic.

For example, imagine a 70’s funk version by, oh, the Commodores.
