K-Pop A-Z Review: EXO – Promise (EXO 2014)

One song. Every day. Alphabetical order.

Keep up with EXO’s A-Z reviews here!

Promise (EXO 2014) (from Love Me Right – 2015)

Despite its title, Promise (EXO 2014) was released in the middle of 2015 as part of the group’s Love Me Right repackage album. The track blurs the line between ballad and mid-tempo, borrowing the structure from the former but the production from the latter. It’s an odd hodgepodge, segueing from tense percussion to moments of near-silence. Promise builds to one of the most passionate, breathless rap verses in EXO’s discography, only to be outdone by a few climactic power notes moments later. Yet somehow the song still feels forgettable when stacked against other material on Love Me Right. This might be due to its placement at the tail end of the album, or its relatively long running time.

  1. This song was written and composed by Lay in Chinese with Chen and Chanyeol writing the Korean verses for EXO fans when Chinese EXO members left. The fans are emotionally touched by the members singing the song, a song acknowledging, thanking and apologizing to the fans and promising that they will be their for their fans. It is not forgettable to the fans.
