K-Pop A-Z Review: EXO – Sweet Lies

One song. Every day. Alphabetical order.

Sweet Lies (from The Power Of Music – 2017)

Sweet Lies’ atmospheric r&b targets an EXO sweet spot, and allows the guys to stretch their vocals over a languid soundscape. The song is plagued by so many modern musical elements I despise, from the constant vocal effects to the trap hi-hats and pitched samples. Yet, somehow the final product comes together in a surprising way. This is the rare occasion where I don’t mind a somewhat formless melody. Sweet Lies has a different goal, and its attempts to pull the listener into a strange aural world are successful. In many ways, the song feels like a spiritual successor to NCT U’s The 7th Sense — only weirder.
