There are few things I enjoy more than a great summertime song. They’re bright, they’re exciting, and they remind me of my favorite time of the year.
There’s no telling what this summer in K-pop will bring, but over the next few weeks I’ll be flashing back each day, showcasing a highlight from past summers. The rules are simple: I fire up my carefully compiled “K-pop summer” playlist, hit ‘shuffle,’ and if the song that pops up hasn’t already been featured on the site, it gets a post and mini-review of its own.
So, get ready for a summer of K-pop on The Bias List!

f(x) – Vacance (2014)
Released as part of 2014’s amazing Red Light album, Vacance (바캉스) catches the girls in total summer vacation mode. I adore the vocal arrangement in this track, layering their voices for a sound reminiscent of 80’s groups like The Go-Gos. The melody swerves with a satisfying structure that feels unpredictable yet cohesive. By the time the song brings in electric guitar for its power pop bridge, I’m utterly smitten. But even before that, the twisting, retro chorus and buoyant synths have firmly worked their way into my heart. The group has more experimental pop tracks within their catalog, but f(x) have rarely sounded this bubbly and refreshing.
