Song Review: Moonbyul (Mamamoo) – Present

Moonbyul - PresentI’ve been picking and choosing which holiday releases to write about this month. When it comes to offering criticism, it’s difficult to find new variations of “I guess the sleigh bells are nice?”. I plan to touch on the tracks I’ve neglected during a holiday wrap-up post on Christmas day, but before that we have Moonbyul’s Present – a song that could be equally at home during a birthday celebration.

Moonbyul’s solo work has been quite diverse, even just in 2022. Songs like G999, Lunatic and Cheese In The Trap share very little connective tissue when it comes to music or genre. They’re held together by the strength of her personality. Present offers another new turn. It’s one third of a three-part music video release, with the songs A Miracle 3 Days Ago and Chemistry also getting videos. Neither of those tracks does anything for me, but I’m impressed at the ambition surrounding this special holiday album.

To be honest, Present doesn’t knock my socks off either. It’s middle-of-the-road and safe, but its brisk, brassy production makes for a fun diversion. If you’re planning on going roller-skating this holiday season, this just might be your song! Its gentle dance beat glides across the track like butter – smooth, amiable and consistent in its groove. Present’s melody is quite weightless, failing to land any memorable punches. But, that’s not really the point of a song like this. My personal highlight comes just before the chorus, when the music drops out and Moonbyul offers a nice musical resolution. And yes, Present includes a few sleigh bells. They’re relegated to the second verse, but I guess they’re nice?

  1. All the songs made me wonder if she got her birthday 3 days before Christmas by any chance and yes, she does indeed, at least no one will forget now haha
But the songs themselves are totally forgettable to me
