Ahead of a full NCT 2023 project later this month, founding member Jaehyun is the latest to deliver a solo track through the group’s NCT Lab platform. These songs have been a mixed bag so far, with the most left-field choices being the most successful.
Songs like Horizon are exceedingly difficult to write about because absolutely nothing catches my ear. Of course Jaehyun has a great voice and vibe, but the song itself wafts along on pleasantries without making any notable moves. It’s a calming salve of a pop track — something pretty to look at and listen to. Its drowsy energy might make good counterprogramming to some of the summer’s more bombastic offerings, but this kind of coffeehouse fare has never been my thing.

I like this song better than Forever Only.

It’s not above Forever Only for me, but I’ll cherish any track where I can listen to Jaehyun for over three minutes straight.

It sounds like an old 80’s R&B mid-tempo from a crooner like Al Jarreau. But the groove never settles into a groove, the instrumental is too jaunty for the song. Just something off.

This is far less engaging than Forever Only. I’m disappointed.

His voice is gorgeous. But his is a voice that needs a particular song and texture to really showcase it. I think Forever Only did that, even though I get why people think it’s a little sleepy. This song is not up to par with that, even though it’s easy on the ears. This will go on my sleepy time playlist.
