I’m not always a huge fan of K-pop covers, but Baekho chose the perfect song in Elevator. The original 1995 Park Jinyoung classic was a staple of the 90’s, yet it never had an official music video and the song’s production is ripe for an update. As influential as this evergreen hit is, you don’t hear it referenced all that often in modern K-pop. It’s time to change that!
Baekho does an excellent job with Elevator. The producers have beefed up the beat, retaining its “new jack swing meets gangsta rap” origin but adding extra force. It feels both nostalgic and fresh. And while the original played things quite loose with structure, this update is taut and explosive. Rapped verses are replaced with shots of melody, delivered with panache that compliments the insistent rhythm. This contrast makes the chanted chorus even more effective, fueled by its iconic brass riff. This is how to put your own spin on a K-pop legend.

Nick doesn’t have an interest in reviewing songs from virtual idols.

Yeah, it’s a line I won’t be crossing at this point — though who’s to say what the future might bring?

OH YESSSSS I CAN VIBE WITH THIS ONEEEE
So much better than debut
I’m always a bit apprehensive when artists redo older songs but this is so sleek and modern but loud and full. A yes from me!
BTW Nick, will there be a review for Kim Woojin’s latest EP?

Most likely not. I just don’t have much to say about the song.

Yeah, this is a really good remake, might prefer it over the original. But Baekho releasing a song about doing… it in the elevator was not in my 2023 bingo card, what a year.

This gets an A from me! I really hope he leans into upbeat material like this for his original music. And its great to see someone who looks like they’re having a good time dancing in a video as well.
