Song Review: NCT U (Taeil & Haechan) – N.Y.C.T

NCT U (Taeil & Haechan) - N.Y.C.TVocal lovers, unite! After terrorizing us with their baggy jeans, the NCT universe has paired members Taeil and Haechan for a jazzy midtempo that lets their voices shine. I’m not crazy about N.Y.C.T as a song, but it encourages you to lean back, put your feet up and enjoy its beautiful soundscape.

SM Entertainment’s next step should be finding an engaging song to utilize these vocals. The agency boasts some of the strongest  vocalists around, yet when it comes time to showcase this asset they constantly resort to piano ballads or dull coffee shop fare. Why not let these explosive voices rip over an equally bombastic track? N.Y.C.T is pleasant and comfortable in a “rainy day under an umbrella” way, but the lyrics and melodies feel like pure fluff. Beyond the aesthetic beauty of the performance, I don’t see myself coming back to this often.

  1. The video is adorable but I wanted a funk beat or an idol crying into a burner phone ballad or even Baggy Jeans pt 2 (it’s a dumb song, but at least it has a POV). Why not even throw them on something like a cover of an OST tearjerker like Doll? Baekhyun and Doyoung sang the hell out of that.

  2. it’s the Haechan bias in me so I like it, an 8 for me. I really do wish for them to get a What Is Love type of track someday, but that’s very optimistic because only Yoo Youngjin could do Yoo Youngjin.

  3. “New York Cee Tee” is my biggest beef with this song. Shouldn’t it be “Enn Why Cee Tee” if they are doing it that way? And what happened to good old “Enn Why Cee”, I’ll give you fair warning, up there in lights I’ll be.

Did I miss an enunciation of “Enn Cee Tee You” along the way?

As an NCT Lab side project, its OKayish. I will be the nth to wish they had better material to sing their hearts out on.

(Ok, pretty obscure ref up there, here it is ‘https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ee1a3KkN4ns )

  4. I could see myself coming back over and over again to this song. It’s pleasant, it doesn’t require much engagement, it doesn’t assail the ears, and it’s just so harmless. NCT’s “contemporary r&b” sound is just so good. If this is a “bombastic track” like what Nick is hoping it would be, I would probably not like this song as much. “Bombastic” or “showstopping” aren’t what I look for in k-pop anymore. What I look for is something I can play in the background while I do my chores lol.

  5. Personally I wish they released Love Sign instead. That imo is the superior duet of Taeil and Haechan. I still like nyct though it’s a nice everyday kind of jam, fits every season. It’s more special to the fans since they participated in creating and writing the song
