In the lead up to his second mini album, EXO’s D.O. has pre-released the gentle I Do (별 떨어진다). If past songs are any indication, “gentle” is likely to be an apt descriptor for this album. Like many idols-turned-solo, D.O. seems to prefer this light, coffeehouse sound.
But unlike some idols, D.O. has the vocal tone to do this style justice. He’s one of those singers I’d gladly listen to regardless of genre. As a song, I Do feels slight. Its melodies are catchy and well-composed, but the minimalist production and laid-back energy restricts its overall appeal. However, D.O.’s vocal adds a ton of life to the song. Tone aside, his phrasing tugs at every line with a sense of personality that elevates this simple track. He brings a natural rhythm to his performance, giving I Do an unexpected swing. It makes me wish he’d find more daring material within this same soft, acoustic framework.

Wow. I’m really surprised you liked the song despite you not being a fan of acoustic, coffeehouse music and not liking “That’s Okay” or his solo debut.
Like most of his discography, I find this song pleasant but a bit boring. So it’s not really for me. But I do agree that he does a good job doing those types of songs; his vocals are just on another level!

Btw I think your rating is incorrect. The score turned out to be 7.5 instead of 7.75 lol.

Haha when listening to it I alternated between “this sounds good!” and “this is reaaaallly cringey” and then ultimately decided not to cover it. Some of the lyrics feel like parody. It’s too bad because there’s a ton of potential.

Its so not them. Whyeeeeeeee. I mean, these guys can sing in a dozen foreign languages, change the key 4 times in one song, and rise to any rock opera challenge. And they get laden with this? Kool, rhyming with pool. And autotune, sweet baby hey zeus.
La la la la la I am not … ok I bought the damn song, but I am listening to their back catalog.
Here, here is a goodie.

D.O. is one of my favorite k-pop vocalists but I agree he should be daring with his music choices. He has a great voice to exploit. Overall, I found “I Do” better than “That’s Okay” because it’s not a “gift” for fans before going to military. It is fresh.

I actually like this, there is an honesty in the performance. I will slot it in the playlist alongside Onew’s excellent “O – Circle”.

I like how the video is a sequel to the That’s Okay video.
