Song Review: Yuju – Dalala

Yuju - DalalaDespite having all the potential in the world, Yuju’s solo career thus far has steered closer to calming coffee shops than the big power notes fueling GFriend’s best material. New single Dalala ups the energy a bit, but succumbs to a subdued groove that threatens to fade into the background.

There have been many songs like Dalala this year. They’re perfectly pleasant — certainly not bad — but they lack spark and melodic range. I find it particularly difficult to engage with music like this, but that may be down to my personal habits. I’m one of those people who can’t help but focus on a song whenever and wherever it might be played. The idea of “background music” feels pretty foreign to me, so I tend to want a track to act like a main course rather than a pleasant OST to whatever activity I might be doing at the time.

This is all to say: Dalala is quite nice and delivered well. Yet, it doesn’t compel or hook me. Even Yuju’s vocal feels restrained. In this way, I guess the song achieves its aim. It would work well in almost any setting, and that malleability could be considered a strength or a drawback depending on how you look at it.

  1. I’ve just come to accept that Yuju likes this kind of music, and I’ll never get anything I want to hear from her solo output. All I can do is hope that Gfriend gets together at some point. The most disappointing part is that Yuju is one of those idols who you just know has all the skills to make it as a soloist since she was both one of the best dancers in Gfriend and the best singer, and it all feels so wasted in these songs that require neither skill.

  2. I both really like this – more so than the comments it seems LOL – and understand why it isn’t as ‘stand out’ or signature as one might hope it could be. Easily I could name a few soloists that could have tackled it fine (Chungha comes to mind) vs. something catered to the strength of her specific voice. A fun time song but not a specific fun time, as it were

  3. I think Yuju avoids power notes anymore to protect her voice; it got pretty shot 2018-2019.

At least it’s a faster song (and I had no idea it was coming, so nice surprise). Without U was a bummer textually and metatextually.

But yeah, this is interchangeable with the Loosamble song.
