“Who Am I” feels like an appropriate song title for JD1, because I had to do some research to find out who exactly Jeong Dong Won was before pressing play. It turns out he’s an established trot singer and actor tackling a more traditional “idol” image with this single. I find that turnabout pretty interesting, and it would be even more noteworthy if the music is any good. There’s recent precedent for this actually, as Lim Young Woong reinvented himself with the great throwback EDM of Do Or Die last October.
Who Am I isn’t as exciting as that song, but it’s a convincing makeover. JD1 has found a hyper-rhythmic track to fulfill his idol quest, ably gliding over a brisk dance beat with a performance that echoes the percussion. Not too much about Who Am I rises above “generic,” but it’s a pleasant sort of generic with a chorus that becomes quite addictive as the song goes on.

I think it is pretty good! if a bit generic. It makes me wish for more character and personality to place this guy in context of other soloists who I can pick out readily (even the ones I don’t stan).

It’s a safe debut song. Sounds exactly like any other K-POP boy band. Let’s hope the next record takes advantage of the fact that JDK can actually sing. I’m thinking along the lines of a rythmic ballad like Risk Astley’s “Together Forever.” (Yeah, I had to go that far back to think of someone who can sing without autotune). And speaking of autotune, why is it used here? JDK doesn’t need it. I suspect they’re using it to promote the AI Robot theme, but modern speech synthesis sounds very realistic with no hint of that telltale phase shifting. I do like JDW’s costume and his dancing skills have grealy improved. The bleached hair really doesn’t suit him. I’d go with bleached tops with dark roots.
