Song Review: IU – Love Wins All

IU - Love Wins AllIt’s been nearly three years since IU released an album, but comeback season is upon us once again in 2024. This kicks off with pre-release ballad Love Wins All. The song’s video has already received buzz thanks to the participation of BTS’s V. But taken on its own, Love Wins All is the kind of ornate, lilting sound you’d expect from IU.

My goodness, Korean charts will eat this up. A beautiful IU ballad released in the middle of the winter? Few things are as much of a slam dunk as this. As usual, IU sounds beautiful, delivering striking high notes with ease. There’s a surprising amount of range to this track despite its hushed energy. It feels like a song you’d hear as part of a stage musical — a lullaby beefed up with as much drama as the composers can muster.

Admittedly, I’m not much of a ballad person. I don’t see myself listening to this too often, but I imagine it will sound very nice in the context of an album. And unlike many Korean ballads, its vocal acrobatics keep me engaged throughout. Rather than continuous swells of strings, IU is the central force driving the music. That’s vital for a long-awaited return like this. I’m excited to hear what she has up her sleeve for the album.

  1. Kiss the day goodbye, and point me toward tomorrow.
We did what we had to do. Won’t forget, can’t regret, What I did for love

Yep, this one here from IU sounds like an old fashioned show tune wrapped up in a pop production.

  2. It’s pretty and the lyrics are really good. Admittedly if IU wants to sing I will love it to death so I’m a bad judge for this. I love it and can’t wait for her album. Hopefully your. I got 6 months to make my girlfriend a kpop fan.

  3. Another horrible reviewer that unless it is a group they stan is not worth 2 cents. So I’ll take this one and throw it out the window where most of their reviews belong.

  4. It’s feels like it’s been forever since IU had a comeback. I love this song so much. Her voice is always so soothing. The MV is so random though haha

  5. So if I had listened to the song without watching the MV I would have given an 8, but unfortunately (or fortunately …) I watched the MV, which absolutely shattered my heart and turned this to a 10 (in a very biased way, I’ll admit). The storyline is so beautiful with them having a disability and the cubes chasing them and wanting to destroy them for it.
IU vocals on the high notes are heavenly. I almost had an out of body experience 😂 and yes the Korean public is eating this up FAST.
