I haven’t been keeping up with idol band ONEWE and didn’t realize two of its members had been discharged from the military earlier this year. Yonghoon and Kanghyun are back for the group’s new track and they’ve certainly been missed. Beautiful Ashes (추억의 소각장) sees the guys continuing where they left off, though it’s a somewhat muted return.
Apart from a dramatic guitar solo two thirds of the way through, Beautiful Ashes keeps things pretty safe and straightforward. The group’s strongest music utilizes gripping melody to accentuate the emotion of the vocalists. That’s the main ingredient missing here, as the tune feels very OST-ready without landing any memorable surprises. Beautiful Ashes crests with expressive drama, but the song itself doesn’t stop me in my tracks. It simply goes through the motions.
Still, it’s fantastic to have the full quintet back together — at least for now. Hopefully this will lead to more musical standouts before other members have to enlist.

crazy how I knew it would be one of THOSE songs with one second (I haven’t seen a k-drama in ages so I’m not even in the mood lol)

Of all ballads, I really enjoyed how this one switches things up more often. It fixes one of the biggest things I had with onewe’s discography by having a really Full sound. Like it sounds truly complete from front to back.
I would highly recommend Shoot it Out, Pleasant, and Meteor Shower from their album for a more energetic, upbeat, rock sound! (the guitar solo in Shoot it Out is insane)
The whole album is really good imo, I would give the title 8.5/10 but the album as a whole 9.5/10

It’s a pretty song, that does nothing wrong. I agree that Beautiful Ashes melody is not their strongest, but Yonghoon’s voice and the instrumental make it work enough for me.
More interesting sounds can be found on the B-sides in this album, especially Shoot it Out and Meteor Shower.
