Song Review: NINE.i – Mirage

NINE.i - MirageI feel like I may have inadvertently cursed NINE.i by placing them atop last year’s “Top 50 Songs” countdown. Since then, they’ve had agency issues and — apart from some great solo releases from member Vahn — have been musically inactive. That changes today with the release of new Japanese single Mirage (蜃気楼).

Sadly, the guys don’t have producers Sweetune in toe this time, but Mirage‘s light pop sound echoes their 2023 work. It’s an amiable track, offering optimistic melodies and a bubbly arrangement. The song does nothing new or noteworthy, but by employing so many classic pop tricks it remains pleasant and upbeat all the way through. Guitar and synth forge a satisfying arrangement, buoying the song’s airy melodies. If nothing else, it’s nice to hear from the guys again. I just wish Mirage took a more adventurous route.

  1. These guys have my full respect for continuing on as a group through all of these troubles – apparently they had to do everything for this comeback themselves, which is super impressive. I really wish this talent was backed by proper agency support, they’re such a good group. I agree that this particular song is mostly… light and unremarkable, but I have hope that they’ll be able to succeed more in the future, they deserve it.
