Song Review: AtHeart – Plot Twist

Given TWS’s incredible success last year, there are worst song titles to debut with than “Plot Twist“! AtHeart have used the familiar title for their first foray into the industry, though they teased us with a pre-debut earlier this year. The group hails from Titan Content — an American based company that seems to have big ambitions for the future.

I’m not sure how I feel about American companies getting into K-pop, but if the music’s good I won’t be able to complain too much. In this regard, Plot Twist isn’t memorable enough to sidestep concerns. Its sparse, atmospheric sound echoes 2025’s overriding girl group trend, becoming yet another entry in this seemingly neverending series of subdued fare. At its heart, the song has a bit more bounce to it than similar efforts, underlined by an incessant electronic beat (and annoying trap percussion that sounds like a broken toy). But like its many peers, the entire track is performed in monotone. The melody might as well be a flat line, wafting through the song without ever aiming for a memorable gut punch.

It’s as if the entirety of Plot Twist operates in another dimension existing just under our own. Its flatness feels almost subterranean, like something mole men and women are jamming to beneath our feet. I suppose this might have its own appeal — especially when played on headphones — but the approach is too sleepy to work for me. I wish they’d open the blinds and let some color in.

  1. I always did wonder why you never reviewed Good Girl (At Heart) due to it being one of the kpop songs to beat imo it’s too good. I think the predebut label confused too many people as far as I’m concerned it was their debut and what a debut it was

As for this song I’m still mystified by it learning towards in a good way. It’s so minor key and melancholic that it skips past NewJeans knockoff and straight into like Imogen Heap territory if that makes sense. I’m struggling to think of who it reminds me of. It feels like it should be in conversation with the Chase due to that massive bass but the Chase was too frothy too lite. I think the subterranean descriptor is the right one it feels like it’s being played underground. It’s really confounding. I can see this growing on a bunch of people in record time. Like it feels accidentally very singular even as it uses a bunch of recognisable tropes.

  2. The introductory section had so much potential, then it all just fizzles away. At best, this could’ve been their Koegawari. If it was produced during second gen, we might’ve gotten a banger like Nothing Lasts Forever or Don’t Forget Me (especially with the synth work), but here we are. Girl’s Day would’ve absolutely killed it with a hook like that at the beginning.

  3. I don’t like the WOOOO-woooooo in the background. People complain about TT’s WOoooooOOOO thing, but this is much more annoying.
