BOYS II PLANET: Episode Ten Recap

PREVIOUS RECAPS: Episode One // Episode Two // Episode Three // Episode Four // Episode Five // Episode Six // Episode Seven // Episode Eight // Episode Nine

We’ve hit another ranking announcement episode, which means I will forgo a longer recap in favor of a quick summary. This week’s episode is over three hours long and I just can’t do that. In contrast, I’m currently going back to watch Universe League (love it!) and that show manages to crank out the ranking announcements in about twenty minutes at the end of a two hour episode that also contains performances and behind the scenes material. It’s super engaging. That’s the way to do it, producers!

In addition to the ranking announcement, there’s a “haunted hospital” variety content this week and some behind the scenes material for next week’s performances, but let’s be honest we all know the important things will be recapped/extended on the next episode.

Top Eight Ranks

If the group were announced today, here are the members:
1. Lee Sangwon (=)
2. Zhou Anxin (=)
3. Lee Leo (↑ 2)
4. He Xinlong (↑ 5)
5. Kim Junseo (↓ 1)
6. Chung Sanghyeon (↓ 3)
7. Kim Geonwoo (↑ 9)
8. Yoo Kangmin (↓ 1)

A couple changes since the last ranking, with Masato and Chuei Liyu falling out of the top eight and Kim Geonwoo and He Xinlong entering. To my mind, it seems the top three are almost guaranteed to debut but strange things have happened during final voting before so we’ll see.

Eliminations

Notable eliminations this round were VERIVERY’s Gyehyeon (this should help Kangmin’s votes, I’d assume), DRIPPIN’s Dongyun (I hope this at least gets DRIPPIN more attention) and NINE.i’s Seowon.

      • Haha I understand where you’re coming from! But I’m talking about another aspect of the show haha. It’s the structure:

It’s like they’re getting eliminated really fast and compared to other shows where contestants go through more performances/tests to showcase their talents, Boys II Planet is already nearing the finals and they barely performed twice..

        • Isn’t that just the established structure for Produce/Planet series?

          1. Signal song test
          2. Cover song battle
          3. Position battle
          4. Original song battle
          5. Finale with additional original songs (usually 2 of them)

It’s pretty much been like this since produce 101 first aired in 2016. I agree with Nick that Universe League is a far more engaging watch because it switches things up from this format (and because it is presented in a way that’s actually interesting) but mnet is extremely married to this format.

Anyway it’s not the finals yet, it’s the semifinals. There will be more eliminations before the finals.
Eliminating huge swaths of trainees at the beginning of the show before anyone could have voted for them *was* obnoxious though, especially considering how much some of them were featured (like the returning c-group boys who were on bp1).

          • This is true. It’s the same thing. Mnet is married to this structure so they adjust in other aspects.

Part of the reason why the eliminations went by fast this season is coz they eliminated the zero-stars both during the first class placement (happens before the signal test) and the signal song judgement itself (the level where Hyeop got eliminated for the sake of mulling K+C to collectively 80 trainees).

            • It was just not fun to watch, didn’t make sense for a show that’s supposed to be based on votes, and added to the whole thing feeling poorly thought out with the K/C blunder.

  1. Another elimination more of my favorite go home, sun jiayang, gyeheon, and dongyung (I feel like he got a really good edit, I don’t get what kept him from getting votes)

    • I don’t know if you heard this already but apparently they’re producing a part 2 as soon as this season is over with all the eliminated c-group trainees. So you should be seeing more of sun jiayang….. for better or for worse

  2. Even though the show is long over and the group already debuted, I would MUCH rather read your recaps on Universe League than see you suffer through B2P 😅 (MNet survival shows and their shenanigans are just so predictable and excruciatingly tedious nowadays)

UL has been one of my favorite survival shows in a long time, especially with the plethora of original music they gave us, and most of them pretty fantastic! Basically everything Team Beat and Team Groove gave me, I loved.
