Song Review: KiiiKiii – Delulu

KiiiKiii had a strange debut year, moving from ultra-quirky sounds to much more straightforward fare before going silent for the last chunk of the year. That was in preparation for their upcoming comeback due at the end of this month. From initial teasers, they seem to be embracing their quirkier side once more, though little of that is heard on pre-release track Delulu.

The girls have gone to the Eastern European club with this one, peddling a subdued dance style that fits firmly within this generations gestalt of girl group sounds. Yes, you’ll get a boppy club beat, but the vocals will be airy and unsubstantial (when they’re even singing) and the whole thing will pass by in just over two minutes like a hazy dream. This type of K-pop seems allergic to making a strong statement. It’s pleasant playlist filler, utilitarian for any situation without attracting much attention to itself. It vaguely recalls dance hits of the 90s but comes across as a watered down version. It’s stylish, aloof and tasteful.

As someone with tens of thousands of songs in his music library, it becomes more and more difficult for a track like this to justify its place. There are already so many superior versions of this style to be found literally anywhere and KiiiKiii need a much more daring statement to fully establish themselves in K-pop’s stuffed rookie field.

  1. Yawn, I’ll just wait for the WJSN comeback next month. (Assuming that will ever happen, but it should because their 10th anniversary is next month and Starshit would do well to give them a comeback for such an important event.)

  2. Cute, but forgettable. Sigh, this is such a slow month for kpop, we’re getting nothing but forgettable, generic stuff (with the exception of Pretty Boy Swag, that one’s been on loop for a while) and to make matters worse and in a move no one ever asked for, Tarzzan dropped the MV for his godawful solo today. If only it weren’t for fuckass college, I’d hibernate till February

    7.25 (7, 8, 7, 7) for me.

  3. It sounds like a song leftover from the New Jeans ascendancy era, pulled out from storage and overlayed with a club beat to try to sound fresh. It doesn’t fully work but it was worth the try, I guess.
