Song Review: ZEROBASEONE – LOVEPOCALYPSE

One strange aspect of the K-pop industry is that it doesn’t really care about endings. Once their cash cow has been fully milked, it’s usually put our to pasture unceremoniously. Often, the only time we get a decent disbandment song is when that disbandment comes unexpectedly and a group’s final comeback ends up being their final song by default. ZEROBASEONE will not buck that trend with LOVEPOCALYPSE, though the track has its moments.

I’m not much into endings myself. I’ve been known to drop dramas or variety series two or three episodes from the end. I’m much more compelled by the building of things, and once that construction is finished I tend to lose interest. Despite their survival series launch, ZEROBASEONE built a relatively stable sound for themselves. There was a time – particularly from mid-2024 to mid-2025 – where exciting foundation was being laid, but everyone knew how the story would end. Contracts are everything in K-pop, and time was ticking away. Early this year, we began the final few steps for the group. This path was laid out as a celebration, but without decent promo and backed by thrown-together visuals, it has felt more like a shrug.

Thankfully, LOVEPOCALYPSE is the strongest of the group’s three farewell songs. Its chorus is legitimately great, backed by a propulsive beat and dramatic guitar. Had the entire track sounded like this, I might be raving about the song. However, the verses trudge forward with inert energy, sacrificing the drive spawned by the chorus. So instead, LOVEPOCALYPSE is half of a great song, as frustrating and haphazard as it is exciting. I’m not quite sure what to do with it, but I guess there’s some solace in the fact that it’s not some dreary disbandment ballad.

  1. this “era” has just been sadly underwhelming in a lot of ways. the songs are so meh, with the exception of ROSES. Star Eyes could’ve been a banger final single. Eternity and HANA are also better, more effective emotional songs. Kep1er’s “farewell” was handled much better and Shooting Star is still the standard for me.

  2. In my heart Blue is the last disbandment song. I wouldn’t consider it their peak tt(In Bloom was never dethroned) but it had a better sense of finality than the last 3 singles. It’s blatantly obvious W1 put 0 effort in the final output and didn’t care to exceed expectations. Very disappointing end for a great group.

  3. OMG I often think and say “they all have the same haircuts”, then today I look at the picture up top and Yes, they all have the same haircuts. Two or three have slightly lighter hair color.

As for the song. It follows the expected structure these days. The chorus does the expected add white noise, faster drum hits, and higher and louder vocals to lift it up. Its not a bad song, its just a formula well done.

  4. To my untrained ears this song sounds like “In Bloom”’s sister and in that sense it seems like they have come full circle. I think it sounds very ZB1 and sets a very good ending to their time as a group. I’ll say 8.25/10

I really wish they would stay together, but since that’s not possible, I hope that the ones that will continue as a group keep their sound. I liked almost everything they put out there.

    • yup it sounds like in bloom. i like that they brought back that sound which defined their first 2 mini albums. it’s like a more mature version of in bloom, which was so youthful and pure.

we were heading somewhere really great with their discography and i will forever mourn what could’ve been.

  5. This was nice, but I’m just gonna go ahead and consider Star Eyes their sendoff song. From survival series they come and to survival series they’ll return.

  6. i wish one of these songs had the energy of good so bad. something FUN, infectious, not as somber like goodbye singles usually are (ioi downpour… heartwrencher). i feel like zb1 had really great musical direction up until the blue paradise album – everything after has been kinda so-so for me. sigh, feels like wakeone gave up in their last year.
