GIRL’S DAY: A Career In Song Ratings

There are a number of acts who have debuted in the past few decades and have dozens of song ratings on this blog. I thought it would be fun to lay these ratings out in chronological order, line-graph style, and take a macro view of their careers so far. Then, similar to my “Underrated K-pop” features, I can average their ratings into one mega-score and place them in a pantheon alongside other acts.

As always, this feature has some rules of its own. I’m including any “Song Review” ratings as part of this graph, including Japanese releases and collaborations with one other artist. I’m not including Buried Treasures or solo/sub-unit releases. For the ratings themselves, I’m using the most current number on this blog, so if a song was part of a “Risers and Fallers” or “Legendary Songs Inauguration” post, that’s the rating you’ll see displayed here. That means there will still be a few ratings here and there I find slightly inaccurate, but it’ll mostly reflect my up-to-date feelings.

Finally, these scores are completely subjective. Feel free to agree, disagree and argue (that’s part of the fun!), but know that this chart reflects the opinion of only one person (me).

  1. Nothing lasts forever is quite possibly one of my favorite songs of all time. Like you said, a legendary song is something that you’d listen to nonstop and actively look for. That’s what I do. I’m glad you also gave it a 10.

Don’t forget me is also a straight up 10.

Twinkle-Twinkle, Hug-me once, and Don’t Flirt are guilty pleasures. Most people don’t like them, but I adore those songs. Those are at least a 9 for me.

Expect is a mid-to high 9s, I love the key change at the end.

Darling and Something are songs that I know many people love. I think those are nice, but not 9’s for me.

I’m quite surprised you rated Oh my god! a 9. I don’t personally enjoy that song, and I thought that you wouldn’t either. Would you mind telling me why you enjoy it so much? (sorry if i sound rude, I don’t mean it that way, I am just curious on your thoughts because I love this girl group so much)

  2. I’m very biased because they are my 2nd favorite girl group of all time so I love all these singles (even the infamous Tilting My Head lol)

Don’t Forget Me, Expect and Female President are 10s in my book.

  3. They had a good singles run, but for me, none of their other songs beat to the golden trio: Expect, Don’t Forget Me, and Nothing Lasts Forever, which are all 10s.

I also like Something — a very classy song with a solid vocal performance from Minah — and Darling, which is a nice summer track. Female President is their most explosive single, but I have to be in a particular mood to listen to it. The only song of theirs I really don’t like is their debut; I can’t, for the life of me, bring myself to even finish it, haha.

  4. YAYYY girl’s day! Expectation and Female President were some of the first kpop songs i ever heard so they are quintessential 10’s for me. i’d rate Ring My Bell a 9, its loud and overproduced but in a good way and it makes me want to dance every time i hear it; my sister has a completely different music taste than me, big on the 70’s/80’s, new wave, goth/blues rock, etc., but its one of the only kpop songs i’ve showed her that she actually likes lol. Don’t Forget Me and Nothing Lasts Forever are perfect songs and i get emotional every time i hear them. such a great discography!!

all of my favorite girl groups have been covered now except 2ne1, lovelyz, and wjsn, so i’m excited for their their posts in the future :DD

  5. Thank you Nick for creating this post. Deep in my mind, I always hum a similar melody of the refrain of Don’t Forget Me – but I just never remember who sing this, how to sing, the lyrics & how to hum to search back this song.

And you, putting this on the top of Girl’s Day discography, making to me check this song out, and boom my dreams come true. Highly appreciated!
