Song Review: IDID – Fly!

IDID made a quick comeback after their September debut, but left fans waiting after that. Six months later, they’re finally back with new single Fly!, melding their old-school hip-hop sound with upbeat melodies. This fits squarely within a realm of current new-gen boy group sounds where acts flip the aggressive, hard-edged hip-hop of the fourth generation into something looser, funkier and more playful.

While I would never call Fly original, I enjoy its general sound. It’s nice to hear a hip-hop track that doesn’t rely on trap or EDM. Fly‘s instrumental is light on its feet and easy to bounce along to. The production is not nearly as captivating as last year’s Push Back, but its breeziness makes Fly nearly impossible to dislike.

The same could be said about Fly‘s melodic verse, which opens the track with a series of standout vocals. IDID’s voices fit well within this soundscape, delivering an effortless sense of character. I’m not as sold on Fly‘s chanty chorus, but it’s mixed with enough melody to add variety. If we’re not going to opt for a more ambitious concept, I’ll happily take uncomplicated fun like this.

  1. So, I have been waiting patiently for the Super Junior “Career in Song Ratings” to hit, and hopefully before the 11th June when I start a two week massive road trip and will be late to the House Party which I should not be late to, while listening to the 200-some SuJu songs on my ipods, for Research of course, while realizing maybe Nick is just too busy filling up the ratings for all the missing singles because he has only reviewed (checks notes) 27 of them.

“Fly” came around just yesterday, and even darling daughter said “What is this?” I see IDID Fly and I raise you SUJU-KRY Fly. This, THIS is uncomplicated fun with standout vocals. Fly‘s instrumental is light on its feet and easy to bounce along to. Its breeziness makes Fly nearly impossible to dislike.

(So, Nick, how are the SuJu ratings coming, any hint for timing?)

  2. IDID continues to impress me. This is exactly the kind of style I wish AND2BLE and ALPHA DRIVE ONE took, this is post-neosound. This is how you make a hip-hop song in 2026, it should be arranged with care in the vocals, in the topline, and it should go somewhere. This is just a very youth-driven R&B and hip-hop sound that borrows a lot of 2000s elements which is so tastefuly done. If they continue pursuing this direction ARrC, IDID and idntt might really my new hip-hop trifecta coming from ATEEZ, BTS and SKZ.

    • I like idid and idntt (although i get them confused sometimes…) but haven’t listened much to arrc comparatively even though my beloved Andy is a member. What are your favorite songs from them?

      • slr… my most played ARrC songs are nu kidz, awesome, dawns, alien in Seoul, kick back, vitamin i and loop.dll. Honestly imo Mystic Story has got the right novelty and elements in their arsenal to derive something out of what they saw as the hegemonic hip-hop sound this derivation is probably why I love ARrC sure they borrow chanting and the hard clashing of underground hip-hop genres but it feels earned and rather in tune than the atonality of a lot of these braggadocio groups.
