Plenty of K-pop acts have imperial phases that last a year or two, but very few maintain such a stellar track record as SHINee’s. Apart from the (very) occasional misstep, they’ve been churning out K-pop classics since 2008. Their comebacks are far more infrequent these days, but a new SHINee album is still guaranteed to get me excited in a way few other artists can manage. And with Atmos, they’ve promised to return to a sound that’s quintessentially them.
This bears out in the music, as Atmos takes the house sound of past classics like View and Good Evening, ripping it open to craft a highlight that’s both propulsive and dreamlike. The synths are far glitchier this time, refusing to sit still and play nice. They churn this way and that, adding an unsettled feeling to a song that could otherwise be quite sleek or even vacuous. This contrast brings unexpected power to Atmos, which is echoed by SHINee’s performance. I can’t overstate how welcome it is to hear artists belt out their lines rather than opt for a stylish, hollow sing-talk. Listening to this, you get the sense that SHINee are laying themselves on the line — an energy quite rare for artists approaching their twentieth year in the industry.
Atmos is melodically taut, especially during the chorus. The hooks are sparse but effective, moving from an ultra-catchy refrain to spikes of warped falsetto that give the track its punch. This centerpiece grows more dynamic as the song goes on, culminating in a bombastic finale that sends Atmos off on a high. This is the energy SHINee wields so well. They didn’t owe us the effort of wielding it once more, but I’m so thankful that they chose to.

Serious SOTY contender right here.
9.5 (9,10, 9,10) and when is the Legendary song inauguration Nick?
Can’t wait to seee what ONF brings later this month!

Also Nick(sorry to ask so many questions), what does your top 10 look like as of now and is there an in- depth review for the whole album coming?

Not OP but we could wait until the end of this month where Nick posts the top k-pop songs of the year so far since that’s the halfway point of the year.

I’ll reveal my mid-year picks at the end of this month. As far as an in-depth review… maybe/probably? Haven’t decided yet.

Or RIIZE. The new album snippets are showing promise. From this year’s releases, there’s also TWS, Xnghan&Xoul, NEXZ and ITZY.

I’d have just liked the synths we heard in the MV teaser to appear…it took me by surprise when they weren’t there where I expected them. Still great though.

also at the end of the teaser there’s this effect on the “oh my” vocals that I wished they used more esp at the end of the first hook

I really liked the way you described the unsettling feeling in the song’s churning verses and even hook. It sounds like a stack of surprises every listen and each one isn’t too soon or too late; its timed just right.

The mini album is even better. You NEED to do a review on Anti Believer! It’s just too good.

the whole album is so awesome, I agree! I’m hoping Nick does an album review like he did for Atlantis and Hard 🙏

I just think…there’s nothing wrong with this song. It’s got everything I love about music and kpop. THIS is how you do house music correctly, take notes kpop industry
It is so wonderful to hear singers not holding back at all, like Nick said. In fact, this entire track holds nothing back. No unnecessary slowdowns, and when the music does “slow down” there are powerful vocals and swooping synths to maintain the momentum. The chorus builds and builds until the euphoric post chorus with awesome synth rhythms. Don’t get me started about the bridge and Onew’s melodic high note. And that leads into the final chorus with ad libs all over and (I’m pretty sure) the post chorus in double time to add to the intensity.
SHINee has shown once again that they are the kings of summer (and house music lol). 9.5 (9, 10, 9, 10) for now, will most definitely grow though

I also want to shout out Kenzie and Andrew Choi, who have created some of my favorite kpop songs of all time (especially for Shinee). Why So Serious, Heart Attack, and now Atmos. Just mad respect

Nice, this is so refreshing – a comeback that doesn’t disappoint! My first thought when hearing it: Why couldn’t BTS do this?…

I think Shinee’s sound differs a lot from BTS. Plus BTS is trying to have a Western appeal which seems to have worked out for them with Arirang. When I think back to past BTS albums such as WINGS and love yourself, they still didnt quite lean into house. The only BTS house genre I can think of is ‘So What’

I only meant that SHINee did what they do best, and stayed true to their sound. BTS, when at their best, weren’t oriented towards being a global pop band. I feel that BTS is still a bit lost as to what their sound is. I remember RM said as much, after they’d made Dynamite and Butter. So it’s kind of surprised me that with their recent comeback, those songs were featured in their setlists, rather than getting back to the classics of their pre-“lost” era. Seems RM’s made peace with them being a Western-leaning pop band.

All I can add is: Tonight! SHINee’s in The House! So give it up give it up give it up for Shiiiinnnaaaaay!
I love View, which is about #30 on my ipod for all time listens. This one will catch up easily to View.
Related note: Darling daughter informed me in the car the other day that she is more a fan of SHINee than Super Junior. This ELF mom is OK with that. She has good taste.

SHINee’s back! Their previous title track, Hard, left an interesting impression on me, but this new comeback felt like it held so much potential right from the start. Going into it, I was expecting some weather-themed concepts and musical styles. Let’s dive in!
1. Atmos
Final Rating: Mid 9
Analysis: SHINee, you’ve done it again. This is easily one of the best title tracks I have heard all year. The vocals, the beautiful rising and falling of the production, and the overall atmospheric feel are just incredible. This track is an absolute journey. While a few of the lyric lines felt a bit unusual, nothing felt majorly out of place or took away from the experience. This is a perfect example of having incredibly high expectations and seeing them beautifully met. Fantastic job, SHINee!
2. HOURS
Final Rating: High 8
Analysis: This is a really nice, funky track, though the beat drop toward the end of the chrous felt a little out of place to me. That said, the layered vocals throughout the track were absolutely awesome.
3. Possibility
Final Rating: High 8
Analysis: This song truly resonated with me. It brought back a sense of the ease and peace I felt when I was younger, acting like a warm hug capable of melting the hardest of hearts. My only minor critique is that the production felt just a little bit underwhelming compared to the emotional weight of the song.
4. Antibeliever
Final Rating: Mid 8
Analysis: I love how the chorus continuously built upward instead of dropping, which showcased their vocal talents perfectly. Overall, the track felt beautifully subdued, almost like a softer, more intimate version of “Atmos.”
5. Still Raining
Final Rating: Low 8
Analysis: Out of all the tracks, this is probably the closest to the specific vibe I initially anticipated for the entire EP. It’s a lovely, soft song, though it might not be a track that I personally return to very often.
6. Thousand Miles Away
Final Rating: Mid 8
Analysis: Even in their ballads, SHINee’s vocals shine so incredibly bright; I feel like I could listen to them for days without ever getting bored. Normally, ballads tend to get a lower rating from me, but I think this serves as a beautiful closer for the EP, leaving the listener feeling completely calm and peaceful.
Final EP Rating: High 8
Conclusion: SHINee, thank you so much for coming back. I knew I could trust you to deliver something truly magical. While this might not be my personal favorite EP in their legendary discography, it is still a remarkably solid release and stands as some of the best material we have received so far this year. I wasn’t entirely expecting this sonic direction, but it is definitely a project I will return to, and I know it will continue to grow on me over time.
Together, the members truly shine, and their collective light is so brilliant. Even though various trials have come their way over the years, their music always manages to stay refreshing and timeless. I’m feeling a little poetic because SHINee is just that awesome—they remind me of the peace of childhood and the personal dreams that I am slowly nurturing myself. The absolute standout tracks for me were the title track (“Atmos”), “HOURS,” and “Possibility” because of its beautiful message. Thank you, SHINee, for starting off the month of June with a bang. Let’s see how the rest of this month’s releases play out!
