Song Review: N.Flying – In Between Seasons

Remember that brief moment when N.Flying were a chart-topping, A-list band? It seems almost like a fever dream now, but the guys have hung around and continued to release music that plays to their strengths. I still prefer the goofier concepts of their debut era, but new single In Between Seasons (환절기 (換節期)) is a pleasant, straight-down-the-line rocker.

There are so many idol bands active at the moment. As the classic musical Gypsy taught us, you’ve “got to get a gimmick” to stand out. The band’s dual vocalists aren’t a “gimmick” per se, but they are a calling card and that firepower is on display here. But even with this double-bladed weapon in their arsenal, I think most casual listeners would be hard-pressed to distinguish In Between Seasons from a DAY6 or Xdinary Heroes track. It does all the things you’d hope a song like this would — cathartic chorus, big, pummeling rock instrumental — but somehow fades into the crowd in a way 2017-era N.Flying never would.

  1. Even though they haven’t reached the tip top of the charts again, they’ve actually been sitting in the Top 100 of Melon for a while with their song “Flashback.” Korea didn’t totally forget about them!

  2. I think its a great song. It is also polished within an inch of its life. No rough edges, all super smooth. All rock and roll and youthful cheekiness is just gone.

This mostly live version is better, though noting a post-production polish.
