SUPER JUNIOR: A Career In Song Ratings

There are a number of acts who have debuted in the past few decades and have dozens of song ratings on this blog. I thought it would be fun to lay these ratings out in chronological order, line-graph style, and take a macro view of their careers so far. Then, similar to my “Underrated K-pop” features, I can average their ratings into one mega-score and place them in a pantheon alongside other acts.

As always, this feature has some rules of its own. I’m including any “Song Review” ratings as part of this graph, including Japanese releases and collaborations with one other artist. I’m not including Buried Treasures or solo/sub-unit releases. For the ratings themselves, I’m using the most current number on this blog, so if a song was part of a “Risers and Fallers” or “Legendary Songs Inauguration” post, that’s the rating you’ll see displayed here. That means there will still be a few ratings here and there I find slightly inaccurate, but it’ll mostly reflect my up-to-date feelings.

Finally, these scores are completely subjective. Feel free to agree, disagree and argue (that’s part of the fun!), but know that this chart reflects the opinion of only one person (me).

  1. Super Duper looking like it’s gonna snap the graph into two 😭 but yeah, they’ve had some classics here and there, although their recent work haven’t matched the level of their best works yet

  2. U know that kind of old CD and VHS rental store vibe, where you’re browsing a shelf full of DVD cases and occasionally spot some guys on a cover with long, spiky hair, and you end up finding it funny enough to take it home? Well, Super Junior gives me that vibe, and that’s probably the safest way I can put it…

  3. 7.5 for No Other? 😭 I’d rate it way higher tbh. That song has aged really well for me — it still sounds so good today. Mr. Simple, Bonamana, and It’s You are also favorites of mine.

  4. They have some great songs and they are still giving it all on stage. Like SHINee, SJ don’t phone it in. It’s You, Black Suit, Devil, Sorry/Sorry are some of my favs.

  5. Fun fact: darling daughter graduated high school this weekend OMG, so this resident ELF was a little busy.

One comment, then I will add more tomorrow morning: Super Duper was not really a promoted single. It’s sole purpose was to be that Super Show’s hype song so that the oppa’s could goof around like this below. If one is to grade Super Duper, may as well grade every Super Show song like the one called Show, or the one called SUPER, or Rock Star (featuring an extended dance by Siwon and Eunhyuk, check that one out), or my personal Super Show favorite Wow Wow Wow. Miracle is also sung at every Super Show since forever – it serves the same fan club purpose BTS Mikrocosmos.

(And if you are following, Super Junior have Super Girl, Super Duper, Super Clap, Superman, and one just plain SUPER, so why did SM create a different group called Super-M featuring no one from Super Junior.)

  6. I share the same 10s as you, but I’m super biased here, so I have several more (A-Cha, Mango, Mamacita, Devil, Black Suit) and then a bunch that fall into 9+ (Miracle, No Other, Superman, Opera, Magic, One More Chance, Lo Siento, One More Time, Super Clap, The Melody). A couple others may sneak their way up there depending on the day. And yes, I am that weirdo who actually likes 2YA2YAO!. Maybe not so much for the song itself, but for some of the vocals. Thankful they continue to crank out good stuff!!
