Song Review: Navillera – Friday Night

Girl group Navillera debuted early this year with the rough-around-the-edges No Limit that built itself upon way too many current K-pop tropes. With follow-up Friday Night, they’ve returned with a bad song dressed up in an upbeat, summery style I tend to enjoy. This results in a very weird listen.

First off, it’s been awhile since I’ve watched a nugu budget music video this awful. Often, the editors can’t get the girls’ lips to match the words and the whole thing has a weird filter and glitchy tracking shots. Because of this, I challenged myself to listen to Friday Night without the visuals. Indeed, its pounding 2nd-gen dance beat and flourishes of tropical synth hit the spot, but the vocal delivery is not great in some places and the song itself is a big nothingburger. It makes me wish a group with more resources would have approached this style instead. For now, I’m enjoying Friday Night as (bad) camp, but I don’t know that I could recommend it in any other way.

  1. the mv looks like one of those fan mvs that only consist of the group members’ teaser videos and live performances

  2. Navillera have two members from Mongolia and, judging by YouTube comments, many or even most of their fans are Mongolian. The company has noticed, because (again according to YouTube comments) some of the lyrics are in Mongolian.

  3. you said that in the past decade no other girl group song released has been able best gfriend’s navillera, so im wondering, what’s the girl group song released in the last decade that has come closest to it?

  4. oh thanks for the review, I would’ve never heard the song otherwise. This is actually really cute, the beats are a fun summer entry! shame about the nugu-ness, all the best for those involved in the production 😭
