New girl group Heart Of Woman has done a nice job promoting their debut album with multiple video clips. Some of these have been lower budget than others, but with visuals such an important part of today’s K-pop industry it makes sense to tie some sort of imagery to the music. And since there’s no other notable comeback released this morning, Close To Me gets a mini review all its own.
Heart Of Woman debuted with a full album but there really wasn’t much I went back to beyond the title track (and b-side Told U So, I suppose). Meanwhile, a song like Close To Me serves an important purpose but does so in a dull way. It’s one of those tracks designed to showcase the group’s vocals. This is admirable and the girls certainly sound great, but the song itself doesn’t do much for me. It’s a slow burn vibe that pairs its verses’ repetitive phrasing with a more effusive chorus. The pre-chorus has the nicest melody of all, but the reserved nature of the track doesn’t elicit many sparks. If the producers really wanted to show off the group’s vocals, they’d build to a dynamic climax or even inject some harmonies into the mix.

Huh, interesting. I like the title track and Told U So, but this song is my clear favorite on the album. For a full album there weren’t too many tracks that I’d seek out to listen to on their own, but as a whole the album is still pretty good and I have given it a lot of listens over the last month.
