EMOTI:M are a new boy group from DNA Entertainment, the agency that used to manage the prolific (yet eternally nugu) GreatGuys. While it’s too early to tell if EMOTI:M will release as much material as their predecessors, they’ve certainly got the “nugu” part mastered with debut single Spark.
I’m always happy to see boy groups tackle a big, bright pop sound, but often these less-than-trendy concepts fall to acts without the resources to fully capitalize on them. Spark is — unfortunately — a mess. It kicks off promisingly with bounding percussion and fizzy synth, but the vocal mixing/arrangement/performance is rough all the way through. It gives off an extremely amateurish vibe, excited but unequipped for the job. With that said, we’ve seen rough debuts before that have completely turned around once a group finds the right producers to polish their sound. I bet someone like Sweetune could do something fun with these guys.

Well, this is cute! Sure, it’s your typical generic bright boy group fare, but I like it. It could do with better vocal mixing though, it sounds like they recorded their voices on a phone and simply pasted it on the instrumental without making it sound smoother.

I’m a sucker for this sound which to me falls in the category of youthful, bright, fresh, without sounding childish. Even though I’m not their target audience, I can appreciate it. I actually liked the fact that I can hear the imperfections in their vocals, wether it is intended or just low budget issues. These days everything is so perfect and auto tuned🤷🏻♀️.
