BOYNEXTDOOR have several distinct modes to their songwriting, and they’ve found the most success with a hyperactive indie-pop sound best characterized by last year’s blockbuster If I Say, I Love You. A few months ago, they were ddok ddok ddoking in their homeland and now they’re Boom Boom Booming in Japan. However, this single might as well be a direct sonic sequel to If I Say.
I really enjoy this sound for BOYNEXTDOOR, but it tends to take awhile to fully click with me. Boom Boom Boom‘s instrumental is just so busy and that can be a lot to take in upon the first few listens. At its best, it’s got a cool electro swing vibe that blends the group’s old-school musical sensibilities with modern touches. This occurs most noticeably in the song’s structure, which feels constantly in flux. We move from a fairly straightforward opening verse to a few rap breakdowns that upend Boom‘s trajectory. Again, this all takes time to settle and I anticipate that being the case here.
For now, I’m concerned with Boom Boom Boom‘s perceived aimlessness but heartened by its breakneck energy. The guys add so much personality to anything they perform and that helps situate this track in their well-developed world. But compared to past highlights within this realm, I can’t really tell if Boom‘s hooks are strong enough to stand the test of time.

It sounds like the song was recorded, then someone reached in and clicked the speed up by 10% just to jazz it up but really it just makes it sound too fast.
Other than that, its OK, except for maybe the current speed.

The piano tune reminded me of Kenshi Yonezu – Iris Out, a nice touch that gave the song a fun element. The quick intro followed by fast-paced rap really made you felt breathless at first, then you were being bombarded by a cacophony of sounds that made you felt bewildered before you can have a breather during the song verse which was not exactly a good experience. The hook was kinda weak too.
I can’t say that I am a fan of such song structure as it took a while to get used too, but I can appreciate the energy and personality infused onto the song. If this is a drama, it served a whole plot twist from the start to heightened up the excitement with lots of loveable characters, but the core narrative was kinda weak that it ended up with only a passable story.

Lowkey, I feel like K-pop has been pretty basic these days, and I absolutely love how BOYNEXTDOOR is able to make unique tracks that break the pattern. I’m in love with the hooks and the noir jazz anime-type sound that doesn’t feel like anything else I have listened to. This gets a 9 for me.

At first, I felt a bit overwhelmed. My brain was telling me that I liked it but I couldn’t keep up with the pace😅. After a few listens, I think it is very good. Best way to describe it is “Earth, Wind and Fire’s” less gimmicky sister. I had fun with it, as usual, It’s very BND. Right now 8.5

Whoever produced this has definitely listened to Yoasobi’s racing into the night. The verses are a bit all over the place though so it doesn’t feel very memorable.
