Three years ago, LE SSERAFIM released Perfect Night, a collaboration with the video game series Overwatch that became a massive hit for them. Now, they’ve back with another collaboration — albiet in a very different genre. Made My Night opts for an energetic club sound, further adding to the resurgence of dance music in K-pop.
Unsurprisingly, I’m much more moved by a good dance beat than a subdued, made-for-streaming-in-the-background bop. So far, K-pop’s foray back into so-called “recession pop” has been heavy on the sing-talk and short on melody. Made My Night pulls us slightly toward the latter and should be seen as a welcome babystep in the right direction. Its repeating brass riff is a tried and true club favorite, giving the track a very European sheen. Overall, the production is uncluttered and generic but gets the job done. It’s fun, energetic and insistent.
Melodically, Made My Night centers around a simple, instantly memorable hook. It’s nothing earth-shattering or even exciting, but will make for plenty of successful dance challenges and short-form content. However, the song forgets what dance music is meant to do: get you to the dancefloor and keep you there. The lure of the rhythm may tempt you out, but the song runs out of ideas and is much too short (and soulless) to keep you dancing for long. Great dance music employs build and release to craft genuinely emotional and transcendent effects. Made My Night is content to take its simple hook and repeat it with no variation. This makes the track sound like exactly what it is: a commercial tie-in. At just around two minutes in length, it might as well be a slightly extended jingle. At least it’s a pleasant one, I guess.

Man I am such a fan of these type of production, full of fun and energetic vibe. The EDM dance beat was also quite enjoyable. Such a shame that the song was quite short and repetitive so it did not have enough sense of progression to make it more interesting. Still a good enough song for a game commercial tie-in and built for SNS engagement I guess.

Another one that sounds like the sounds spilling out of a Zara on a UK high street. There is a place for this sound, and my own playlists are not it.

has a quirky 10s edm flow that doesn’t feel forced alongside a catchy brass section that calls back to T-ara’s Sexy Love. Was bopping along so if they were trying to get people to dance then mission accomplished. Definitely a step up compared to Perfect Night even if it is a small babystep.

hi nick what would you say was the best year for kpop girl groups in terms of quality? i think 2009 and 2011 were pretty stacked.

I could probably crunch numbers to give a more well-supported response, but off the top of my head I really liked where girl group trends were in 2015.

I don’t know if it’s my favorite because I’d need to think about it in more detail, but I just think back to all the amazing gg releases that year. The overall trend seemed to be big, splashy melodies with vocals placed front and center. Wonder Girls, AOA, Sistar, Lovelyz, GFriend and so many others had banner years, but even groups I’m not as interested in were reliably good. There are probably other years that could fit this same description, though!

i have a question though: what kpop song would be your favorite for 2009? would it be a girl group or a boy group?
just asking because i saw that genie from SNSD was ranked pretty high on your all time favorite kpop songs, but i’m not sure

Most likely Genie, though I haven’t actually sat down and thought about it. That was the highest 2009 song on my all-time countdown.

ohhh i get it. looking at your 2015 countdown half of the list was girl groups in the top 10, probably the most compared to all the other years you have made lists about on this blog.
didn’t 9muses also release hurt locker? that’s alot a very strong highlight of the year, and i’m surprised it didn’t land in the top 10!

I think the Perfect Night collaboration is better in my opinion. It had good Lo-fi vibes and the MV integrated LSF and Overwatch characters better.

It’s decent imo, but there’s nothing memorable or interesting in it that would make me want to seek it out again unfortunately (also it’s too short but I was kind of expecting that </3). It’s certainly an improvement over Boompala or Celebration but I think it falls short to Perfect Night. TBH, I was rlly hoping for a MV for a B-side I like from Pureflow Pt. 1, like Irony or Saki but I guess beggars cant be choosers </3. Anyways, I’d give the song like around a 7.35/10. Also unrelated but am I the only one who got reminded of BBoom BBoom by Momoland when listening to the instrumental??? Now I want to listen to that song lol.

How does things get THIS bad?
Made My Night has everything I love about dance music: decent house beats with a brassy sax to keep me grooving on and on. A fire choreography to mime after.
And then HYBE cut it down to brainrot length. Actually, they SCALE it across all their groups.
So, no. If it has dared to got Danceteria, I would have given it a 9/10 on all categories. But as it is, 0/0/0/0.
Disliked. Downvoted. Reported. And not listening ever again.
(Thanks god Miley gives us Bass Persuade to dance along this week).
