It’s been a long while since we heard from Hwang Minhyun — or any Nu’est member, really. I almost forgot that he was still part of Pledis Entertainment. Today, he’s back with new digital single Our. It’s a nice — if uneventful — return.
This is the style of synth-kissed mid-tempo I’d expect from male K-pop soloists. The production has some bounce as the tempo gets going, but the whole thing is quite tasteful and reserved. Minhyun isn’t looking to ruffle any musical feathers here. Our plays it safe throughout, softening for its atmospheric verses as if the chorus’s slight burst of energy was already too exciting. The problem here is that nothing is particularly exciting, from the instrumental to the vocal to the melody. This is simply another song and I’m not sure what it’s trying to accomplish beyond acting as a quiet reminder that Minhyun is still active as a singer.
