Song Review: cosmosy – Give Me Love

Thus far on the blog, Japanese/global group cosmosy’s work has been relegated to J-pop round-up posts. They’ve promoted occasionally on Korean music shows, but I haven’t connected with any of their music. However, new Korean single Give Me Love offers a shift in sound toward the aggressive electro stomp that’s become one of the year’s biggest sonic signatures.

In K-pop, these songs often tend to be intricately produced yet melodically sparse. Give Me Love isn’t particularly different, but it gets closer to a balance that works for the song. I love the heavy industrial beat. It really grabs you by the collar right away and refuses to let go. And though the melodies are pretty flat, the songwriting avoids the kind of throwaway chanting that mars so many of its peers. The chorus — simple as it is — has real intention and compliments the production. Better yet, Give Me Love delivers a full course meal, clocking in at over three minutes. This allows space for a couple of cool momentum shifts and a final dance break that clobbers you over the head.

  1. Well it hits the current kpop trend of noisy dirty techno dance. We will hear even more of this, because how hard could it be to add a grungy bass and stutter the voices. This example here does it fairly well.

On a related Cortis “Red Red” has grown on me. Serious guilty pleasure. (I know, I know, GREEN! GREEN! something da something da RED! RED!) Somehow in the car after work, its the sound I want to hear. So if this song here today is the one that helps you cope with the chaos in the world, who am I to judge?
