I have great admiration for Shinhwa as a group and love a lot of their material, but for some reason none of the members’ solo output has done anything for me. Unfortunately, Shin Hye Sung’s new song continues the trend. It really comes down to personal preference, because the song succeeds in what it sets out to do, which is basically to be a smooth, sexy r&b number. Shin’s vocals sound impeccable, and there are little moments that stand out, like the playful bridge with its catchy hand choreography and the slinky, spare production that underpins the subtle hook. In fact, I have no problem with this as a pleasant Shinhwa album track, but as a single it just doesn’t have enough of a hook to make much of an impact. On the plus side, I’ve enjoyed the song more each time I’ve listened to it, even though it’s been difficult to recall many melodic high points after it’s finished playing. I’m not sure what “roco drama” is supposed to mean, but there is definitely a mysterious, quiet storm vibe surrounding the entire song.
