An Inconvenient Truth (from New Challenge – 2013)

Long before the tropical trend hit maximum impact, An Inconvenient Truth’s bright synths brought an island sound to k-pop. Though the song’s lyrics have been derided by many, there’s no denying the strength of its production and melody. It’s one of Infinite’s most beat-driven tracks, stuffed with electronic drum fills and a persistent, upbeat drive. There’s an undeniable 80’s sentiment throughout, but rather than feel artificial or pre-programmed, the bounciness of Sweetune’s instrumental injects a jubilant sort of warmth that gives Truth an effortless, festive energy. And then there’s that brilliantly rhythmic hook, which pulls at the edges of Infinite’s sound to deliver a welcome transformation for the group.

  1. I always struggle so much with this song because I think it’s one of the most interesting musical moments of their career but the lyrics (and the accompanying MV for live shows) make me super uncomfortable with the way they deal with women. It’s undeniably fantastic musically, but I don’t think I’ll ever be able to consider it one of my favorite Infinite songs because of the lyrics :/

      • Yeah, definitely one where I’m glad I don’t know enough Korean to know exactly what they’re saying unless I have the lyrics in front of me, so I can pretend I don’t know what it’s about.
