K-Pop A-Z Review: EXO – Baby

One song. Every day. Alphabetical order.

Keep up with EXO’s A-Z reviews here!

Baby (from XOXO / Growl – 2013)

A large portion of EXO’s first full-length album was devoted to retro, mid-tempo r&b jams, and Baby slots within that framework well. Over a blend of fitful synths and skittering, 90’s throwback percussion, the track manages to generate momentum despite its relatively subdued energy. The chorus injects some resounding stabs of synth to forge an unexpected build that adds to the track’s organic ebb and flow. Through it all, EXO’s layered vocal performance gives Baby enough character to stand out. It still feels a bit extraneous when compared to similar tracks in their discography, but it’s hard to argue with a group operating in their sweet spot.

  1. This song is pleasant in a pleasant sort of way. I like the oriental scale effects on the synth that is sprinkled throughout, and also the sparkling synth sound.
I don’t think I would seek out this song again, but if it happened to come on I wouldn’t hit the skip button either.

  2. It took me 2 years of being an EXO fan to discover this song exists!
Its one of their cheesiee tracks but is kinda fun in a nostalgic way. Sounds very late 2000s pop.
