K-Pop A-Z Review: EXO – Hurt

One song. Every day. Alphabetical order.

Keep up with EXO’s A-Z reviews here!

Hurt (from Exodus / Love Me Right – 2015)

Even when EXO tracks brood, they usually do so over an interesting hodgepodge of instrumental elements. Hurt perches itself atop an aggressive stomp and sweeping, distorted synth. It opens like a dark carnival ride, but retains its blustering energy across the next three-and-a-half minutes. The impassioned vocals compliment this mood, but I’ve always found the melody to be too one note. Hurt is a good song to play when you need to release some angry energy, but beyond that I find its structure too plodding to stand as a highlight in their discography.
