Lights Out (from Universe – 2017)

Ending EXO’s 2017 winter album in theatrical fashion, Lights Out is as close to a torch song as the group has given us. Its impassioned melody rises and falls over a piano instrumental. Lights Out is a vocal-line-only affair, performed by the enviable quartet of Baekhyun, D.O., Chen and Suho. The song gives them all equal spotlight, including a few haunting background ad-libs that highlight the sparseness of the production. As beautiful as this all is, Lights Out is missing that one big moment. It peters out when it should explode, even if restraint is the modus operandi here.
