K-Pop A-Z Review: f(x) – Let’s Try

One song. Every day. Alphabetical order.

Keep up with f(x)’s A-Z reviews here!

Let’s Try (from Electric Shock – 2012)

I’ve always had a love/hate relationship with Let’s Try. It’s such a gawky  pop track, hinging on a sing-song hook that’s either addictive and cloying depending on your mood. The track’s sheer spunk gets it over the finish line, and I do enjoy the vast range of notes used in the chorus. The contrast between the high-pitched peaks and grittier, Amber-fueled valleys really works. But, Let’s Try’s highlight is probably its effusive pre-chorus, which is fleshed out by synth pads and a more layered vocal arrangement. A little of Let’s Try goes a long way, so I guess we’ll just call it a guilty pleasure.

      • I don’t think that would be possible , since Red Light didn’t even come in the Honorable Mentions of Nick’s Top 100 K-pop Songs.

On Top of that , Red Light is 7th In His Top 10 F(x) songs
And in the “K-pop’s Greatest Single Runs” post , Nick commented ” I admire a track like Red Light and think it’s super solid, but it’s not something I choose to listen to often.”

So I think by this Red Light wouldn’t even get above 9..

Airplane is one K-pop’s Most Underrated songs and I the first time I heard it , I was like “How is this not a 10?”

        • Airplane is great! I love how the verses actually mimick the feeling of an airplane taking off- to me at least it sounds the way that a takeoff feels.

    • I doubt Nick will be as enthusiastic as I am on this song but Mr. Boogie is my favorite f(x) song. I was surprised that I never saw anyone talk about this song before I listened to all their discography for the forst time this summer.

The trio Red Light – Pink Tape – 4 Walls tends to overshadow the previous albums so I’m glad we have these A-Z reviews to showcase every songs

  2. I hadn’t heard this song before. In its current state, it overstays its welcome by at least a minute.

The theme in the chorus is really strong though, so if they had wanted to work with it more, they could have thrown it at a classical composer and say “here, add five more variations”, like a Mozart did with what I know as Twinkle Twinkle little star, or Charles Ives did with My Country Tis of thee (aka God save the Queen).

It could also have used a key change, which I think it would have earned.

As is, yeah, bside material, rating maybe a touch high.
