Milk (from Red Light – 2014)
Though there are more obvious triumphs on the Red Light album, Milk has long been a favorite of mine. This song is all about percussion, which drives every element and extends to the girls’ highly-rhythmic vocals. Its verses are relatively subdued, but the pre-chorus quickly arrives to offer a tense electronic build. The chorus utilizes K-pop’s dreaded beat drop formula particularly well, delivering an addictive groove that ties the entire thing together. But as with many f(x) tracks, the most interesting moments occur between the lines. Milk sneaks in jolts of ascending melody to brilliant effect, ensuring that the song never grows stale.
