Summer Lover (from Red Light – 2014)

You’ll probably have a sense of how Summer Lover sounds before even playing it, and the song does a good job encapsulating the appeal of the season. The instrumental melds a stomping beat to an alt-rock loop. I love the texture of this guitar. It has a sense of grit that contrasts the poppy melody and airy vocals. For an upbeat, summery track, Summer Love surges with more drama than most. Its bridge is especially satisfying, as the melody ascends to an unexpected climax. At its heart, this is a pretty simple pop song. Yet, it’s also a great example of how dynamic arrangements can propel simplicity to great heights.
