Song Review: Misamo (Twice) – Marshmallow

Twice Misamo - MarshmallowTwice’s first promoted sub-unit Misamo debuts not with a Korean release, but a J-pop song. This is a little surprising, especially since the mellow Marshmallow seems suited to Korean tastes. But when you realize who’s involved in this unit, the decision couldn’t be clearer. Misamo gives the group’s three Japanese members a chance to shine on their own. It’s an exciting prospect, even if the actual song does nothing for me.

I appreciate when sub-unit releases make drastic shifts from a group’s core sound, and Marshmallow aims far from Twice’s bubbly dance pop. It brings the energy to a slow-burn, letting the girls indulge in mid-tempo r&b. This is a smart move, and Twice have a few strong b-sides in this style. However, songs of this nature need at least one of three main elements: a killer vocal, an irresistible beat, or a dynamic melody. The best tracks indulge in all three. I don’t think Marshmallow has any.

The trio’s vocals are perched in a deeper register than normal, but the song lacks melodic range so there aren’t opportunities for them to deliver any knockout riffs or… much of anything, really. The track lopes along on a lo-fi groove that feels underdeveloped and uninteresting. It’s three minutes of dull sing-talk — at times very heavy on the “talk” portion of that descriptor. Thankfully, this is only a pre-release. I hope their full single gives Misamo something more interesting to chew on.

  1. yeah this was pretty boring. never would’ve expected twice of all groups to release coffee shop fare as a single

  2. There are two positives I can pull from this: 1.it’s a great move to make a subunit of the japan line (maybe even overdue)2. you can hear the maturity in their performance. All we need is a more interesting song

  3. This is good background music to read my summery beachy book to. Mostly because its kinda boring and doesn’t grab your attention at all. I love Twice with all my heart and soul and they’re my favorite group so I’m contractually obligated to say its good but I wish it had more personality. Momo is the only one that stands out in any way. Sana all but disappears and Mina kinda sounds more like a feature. I hope the next ones stand out more.

  4. I really like this song for the first time. This song is so different compared like the sound of Twice; but at this point i have the feeling that they are (Misamo) discover New things and doing their unique vibe. My favorite parts were the first part of Sana (where she has the audios), the Momo rap and the Mina parts especially (walk, rest, running ah).I love the storyline because i don’t remember a twice video with a boy in it (so near of Mina)
The r&m was so relaxing and i feel that it was the amazing point.

    • Great review! If you haven’t already, can you review doughnut by Twice? So a lot of fans love this song and I’m curious if I’m really just the odd one out? Like I think it’s a good song, but people truly think it’s a masterpiece/ one of their best. I’m curious to hear your analysis!

  5. This vibe isn’t for everyone, personally I love this song, but your opinions make sense, this song would be a lot better if it were more interesting.
