Song Review: Ballistik Boyz – Jiggy Paradise (Battle Of Tokyo)

Ballistik Boyz - Jiggy ParadiseDebuting in 2019, Exile Tribe’s Battle Of Tokyo is one of the coolest projects developed by any entertainment company. It brings together the agency’s Jr.Exile groups under fictional guises in a futuristic battle royale. It’s a multimedia project, including videos, books and — of course — music. This week, the third chapter in the series is unveiled. Battle Of Tokyo: Code Of Jr.Exile gives us five new tracks. One new music video will premiere each day this week and I’ll offer my thoughts on each as they become available.

Japan may be the last music market on earth to use the word “jiggy” unironically. This track feels unabashedly silly, which tempers its hard-hitting attitude and posturing. It’s not my preferred Exile style, but I’m surprised how much I enjoy this.

I’m mainly here for the thumping beat during the verses, the occasional shots of gorgeous vocal harmony and the old-school breakbeats that underline the chorus. I wish there was less shouting overall, but Ballistik Boyz have a way of making this approach work. They have a strong energy that fuels these hype tracks with plenty of character. Jiggy Paradise is far from my favorite track of this Jr.Exile project, but it’s very in keeping with their strengths.
