Song Review: XG – New Dance

XG - New DanceXG continue to make inroads into K-pop markets, most recently performing at this year’s KCON LA. I’ve struggled to connect to most of their music, but I think I’m in the minority. Their blend of hip-hop, dance and fierce attitude seems poised to make them favorites of international fans.

New Dance is XG’s most straightforward pop track yet, delivering upbeat grooves and catchy hooks without the kind of posturing that sometimes characterizes the group. Its vibe is addictive, though the execution can feel a bit trite. The song is at its best when perched at a lower register. Its constant exclamations quickly grow tiring and New Dance would be better off without them. Apart from these moments, the track has an enjoyable 90’s sound — equally buoyant and smooth. Its “I just learned a new dance” refrain stays just clear of becoming cloying, though we’ll see how it ages with time.

  1. Just vibing with this summer pop track. No ups or lows, just quiet contentment. Did enjoy that bridge when the instrumentals kicked in.

  2. This song is very early 2000’s. I can absolutely see this being played next to Nelly’s Ride Wit Me. I like this song a lot. Its catchy and fun. Its nice song to kind of end summer with.

  3. I am big on music video visuals and I love how well the 2000s and 90s aesthetic is executed here. Absolutely amazing and top tier. Side eyed them after the cultural appropriation incident ( and still do), but they do have great music and a lot of potential. I think rather than insulting kpop right out the bat and alienating Korea knowing they would work in the kpop space anyways, their agency should have sotra liaised with the kpop industry, it would have given them more legitemacy. I can see this doing well in Korea, which would also please the i-fans they want to attract.

    • TBF it wasn’t them, it was the ex CEO of their parent company who made the stupid remarks. As far as I can tell, xgalx and the ppl in it have a lot of respect to kpop, esp considering the CEO is an ex kpop idol. It just sucks that an old crusty man ruined shit as usual!

  4. “Finally some good fucking food”

(Just wish they’d stop repeating “I just learned a new dance” we get it. I still like it though. Just vibes 🤙🏾)
